The officers, executive board, and members of IAFF Local 416 are heartbroken by the sudden loss of our brother, Firefighter Private and Sergeant Nathaniel Thomas.
Brother Thomas embodied a life of service. Whether serving his nation as a Sergeant in the Indiana National Guard or protecting the citizens of Indianapolis as a firefighter assigned to Engine 9 A Shift, he demonstrated the commitment, courage, and selflessness that define both professions. He answered the call to serve wherever he was needed, and his impact will be felt for years to come.
Nathaniel was more than a firefighter and soldier. He was a husband, father, son, brother, friend, and respected member of our fire service family. His loss leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him and throughout our department and union.
On behalf of the nearly 2,500 active and retired members of Local 416, we extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Morgan, their children Rilynn, Donny, Maggie, Harper, and Wiley, as well as his parents, Donald and Bethanne, his sister Sarah, and all of his family and loved ones.
As firefighters, we often refer to one another as brothers and sisters because the bonds we build through service are unlike any other. Today, we mourn the loss of one of our own. We ask our members and the community to keep the Thomas family, the members of Engine 9, the Indianapolis Fire Department, and the Indiana National Guard in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Local 416 stands ready to support Brother Thomas's family, his firehouse family, and all those affected by this tragedy. We encourage any member struggling with this loss to utilize the peer support and behavioral health resources available through our union and department.
Brother Thomas served with honor, dedication, and integrity. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
In Solidarity,
Shannon Whiteley
