Indianapolis Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 416 members rescued an unconscious man from a residence fire on Sunday.

Indianapolis Fire Department crews arrived to find smoke coming from a two story, boarded up building and a fire burning in the downstairs living room.

During a primary search, Local 416 members quickly located an unconscious man upstairs. Fire fighters used a ground ladder to remove him through a window and bring him safely to the ground.

IFD and IAFF L416 Indianapolis EMS District members immediately began providing medical care. Within minutes, the man showed signs of improvement and was transported to an area hospital for further treatment.

Exceptional work by all Local 416 members on the scene. Your courage, skill, and bravery make a difference every day in protecting the citizens of Indianapolis.

Lebanon Professional Firefighters, IAFF L5195 members conducted a high angle rope rescue after a car plunges into Prairie Creek on Saturday morning.

City of Lebanon Fire Department crews were dispatched on a tactical vehicle collision requiring a high-angle rope rescue. Upon arrival, fire fighters found a vehicle partially submerged in the water. The driver had managed to exit the cabin but remained trapped and stranded on top of the vehicle.

Due to the steep, muddy embankment, technical rescue teams utilized a high-angle rope system to safely lower personnel down to the top of vehicle with the driver. Local 5195 members secured the driver were able to successfully raise them from the creek to the roadway without incident. The individual was evaluated at the scene by emergency medical services and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Exceptional job by all these Local 5195 members! A rope rescue technician is a highly trained specialist who uses advanced rigging systems, mechanical advantage, and specialized hardware to safely access, stabilize, and evacuate victims from environments where conventional access is impossible. This rescue is another example of Indiana fire fighters putting those skills to work when their communities need them.

Give your heater some space this winter! Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from all heating equipment. Before using a portable heater, make sure it has a built-in thermostat control and an automatic shut-off feature in case it tips over. Always choose heaters that have been tested and approved by a nationally recognized laboratory. Stay warm and stay safe!

Specialty trained fire fighters from multiple PFFUI First District Locals rescue a man trapped 10 feet below ground in trench on Thursday.

Crews from Penn Twp Professional Fire Fighters Local 5019 responded to find the man trapped from the knees down by soil. Due to the depth and complexity of the rescue, the MABAS 201 - Indiana District 2 US&R/Technical Rescue was activated, bringing additional personnel, specialized equipment, and technical rescue resources to the scene.

The response included members from Clay Firefighters, IAFF Local 1630, Elkhart Firefighters Local 338, Mishawaka Fire IAFF Local 360, South Bend Firefighters Local 362, and Warsaw Professional Firefighters Local 5461.

Working together, crews stabilized the area and safely freed the man. He was successfully removed from the trench and transported to the hospital for further evaluation and care.

Exceptional job by all of our First District members on the scene. Trench rescue requires specialized training, equipment and coordination to safely stabilize collapsed trenches, reach trapped individuals and bring them to safety. This rescue is another example of Indiana fire fighters putting those skills to work when their communities need them.

Professional Firefighters of Kokomo Local 396 members earn life-saving award after rescuing woman from a residence fire.

Kokomo Fire Dept crews were dispatched to a residence fire on October 7. On arrival, they found smoke coming from the residence. Fire fighters entered the home to search for anyone who might be inside and located an elderly woman in a bedroom. The crew safely carried her outside.

In recognition of their actions, Fire Chief Paul Edwards presented Acting District Chief Landen Bartley, Captain John Haynes, Driver Adam Shaffer and Firefighter Cory Rupert with a life-saving award.

Halloween is a time for fun costumes, lots of candy, and spooky decorations. Be seen, stay safe! Give children flashlights, glow sticks, or reflective goodie bags to help them stay visible while trick-or-treating. Adding reflective tape to costumes can also help drivers see them in the dark.

The Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana will host its Fall District Meetings for Local Executive Board members beginning November 5, 2026.

PFFUI Principal Officers, District Vice Presidents, and staff will share updates on statewide and International Association of Fire Fighters initiatives, upcoming training opportunities, and reports from affiliate Locals.

Registration details and additional information have been emailed to all Local Officers. If your Local has not received the information, please contact the PFFUI office.

We look forward to connecting with Local leaders from across the state!

The PFFUI Working Group, established by convention resolution, met in Fishers this week to begin work on reviewing retirement, disability, and death benefits across public safety systems. Work included a deep dive into benefit structures, plan composition, and historical evolution, as well as an examination of General Assembly oversight, the legislative process, and INPRS management.

The group will continue its work through the first quarter of 2027 and will present its summary to the PFFUI Executive Board, along with a full report, at the 2027 PFFUI Convention.
