Martinsville Professional Firefighters Union Local 4214 members rescued a person who was trapped in a drain on Wednesday.

City of Martinsville Fire Department crews responded to a report of a person trapped in a storm drain about 7 feet deep. Specialty trained fire fighters prepared for a confined space rescue, setting up air monitoring, ventilation, and a rope system before entry. Once the area was confirmed safe, a confined space technician entered the drain and secured the victim in a rescue harness.

The victim was safely raised from the drain and transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Great work by these Local 4214 members. Their specialized training prepared them to safely rescue people trapped in tight or dangerous spaces while providing immediate medical care when needed. This is another example of Indiana fire fighters putting their specialized training to work to protect their community.

Extreme heat is expected across Indiana, creating added risks for fire fighters on the fireground.

Firefighting activities can significantly increase the risk of heat related illness. Heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke can develop quickly, sometimes without warning.

Incident Commanders and company officers should stay proactive and closely monitor crews throughout an incident.

During extreme heat, fire fighter safety needs to remain a priority.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay safe.

Hendricks County Professional Firefighters Local 4406 members from the Brownsburg Fire Territory reunited with the patient they saved and were honored with a lifesaving award at the Brownsburg Town Council meeting Thursday night.

Mr. Gary Shultz recently suffered a cardiac arrest, and Brownsburg Fire Territory firefighters and paramedics played a critical role in giving him a second chance. Crews provided advanced life support after citizens and responders began CPR and quickly got an AED to the scene.

Several Brownsburg citizens, police officers, medical professionals, and BFT crews worked together to give Mr. Shultz the best chance at survival.

Last night, Mr. Shultz returned to the Brownsburg Town Council meeting and personally presented lifesaving awards to those who helped save his life. Exceptional job by all Local 4406 members on this scene!
