Did you know that Blue Spruce Park has some of the darkest skies in Indiana County? Join us for an evening under the stars as we explore the beauty and wonder of the night sky. We’ll learn why darkness matters, find the circumpolar constellations that stay with us year-round, discover seasonal stars and constellations, explore the phases of the moon, and uncover some of the mysteries of the cosmos. We’ll be joined by special guest Jody Farr of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh, who serves as Associate Director of Wagman Observatory at Deer Lakes Park. Jody's fascination with astronomy began with the arrival of Halley’s Comet in 1986, when his parents gave him his first telescope for Christmas. He has now been a member of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh for about 12 years. Jody will bring a Celestron 9.25-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, and we’ll also have Seestar S50 and DWARF 3 smart telescopes for long-exposure views of the night sky. Weather
permitting, we’ll see Saturn and its rings, along with several of its moons, and perhaps venture farther into deep space to view objects such as the Andromeda Galaxy, Ring Nebula, Dumbbell Nebula, Pleiades, and Hercules Cluster. Bring your curiosity--and your own binoculars or telescope if you have them--and join us for a night of exploring the universe! If we have cloudy skies, we will still do the indoor portion of the program.
