Appalachian Studies Association (ASA) The Association is run primarily by volunteers who make up the governing committees of the Association.

Fostering quality of life and appreciation for Appalachia and promoting and engaging action since 1977, the ASA is a non-profit organization located at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. The Appalachian Studies Association (ASA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1977 by a group of scholars, teachers, and regional activists who believed that shared community has been and will continue to be important to those writing, researching, and teaching about Appalachia. One of the main ways ASA fulfills its mission is through hosting an annual Appalachian Studies Conference at different locations each year. Additionally, the Appalachian Studies Association publishes a semi-annual newsletter (Appalink) which keeps members up-to-date on Conference information and other ASA events, as well as the Journal of Appalachian Studies which contains scholarly articles, book reviews, and bibliographies. Anyone wishing to contribute to the Appalachian community, acquaint themselves with Appalachia, or just to learn more about the area is welcome to join!

Travis Stimeling Early Career Award for Excellence in Teaching Appalachian Studies honors individuals within the first ten years of their careers who are dedicated to intellectual rigor and pedagogical integrity in constructing and delivering inclusive knowledge about Appalachia and its people.

This award was established in 2024 by the ASA Education Committee. The award was named in memory of the late Dr. Travis Stimeling, Professor of Musicology and Director of the Bluegrass and Old-Time Bands at West Virginia University.
Preliminary nominations must be submitted by November 1st, 2026.

Workshop: Cooking with Sorghum

Monday, October 19, 5-6:30 pm

Vickery House, Dahlonega

Learn, taste, and add to your healthy diet. Dr. Kathleen Thompson will share the history of sorghum growing and syrup production and survey the health benefits of sweet sorghum syrup as a cooking ingredient. Try a chewy sorghum cookie and participate in a cooking project. Sorghum popcorn balls, Boston brown bread in a paper cup, and a sorghum dipping sauce will be made. Take a handout with more recipes to try at home.
