This weeks HRFR Safety Post is yielding to emergency vehicles, this is crucial to our response not only for a timely response but more importantly, the safety of you, your passengers and the crews on board that vehicle. Not only is it important because of the previously mentioned, but it is also the Pennsylvania State Law to yield to emergency vehicles with lights and sirens activated under 75 Pa.C.S. § 3325.
The proper thing to do when you see or hear an emergency vehicle approaching is pull to the right and stop your vehicle, trying to race ahead of the emergency vehicle is only creating a hazard to those around you. The emergency vehicle will navigate around you if there is not space for you to safely get off the lane of travel. We see this very frequently and unfortunately a lot of our drivers have gotten use to this. Please keep in the back of your mind it very well could be someone’s life on the line that we’re responding to and vehicles that fail to yield can delay those responses. Below is a short clip (posted with permission from the Fire Chief) of a vehicle properly yielding. Another thing to keep in mind, we often see this at our Huntingdon Borough Station, it is illegal to pass an emergency vehicle with its lights activated without being directed. More often than not when we are backing into the engine bays, we have vehicles cut around us while we are still in the street. Please have patience and give us the time to safely back into the bay, this takes less then a minute.
