Did you miss the Blair Chapel open house last Saturday? No worries — the free Thursday walking tour at 6 p.m. on August 13 will be a look at the chapel and at Blair Park, which surrounds it. There is limited parking available in the park itself; if that fills up, please park across Penn Street from the entrance gates (the address is 105 Penn Street). Walking tours take place rain or shine; if you plan to do much walking outside, you might want to think about insect repellent.

How much do you know about the birds of Huntingdon County? The 10 a.m. free Thursday walking tour for August 6 will be led by Doug Wentzel in Smithfield’s Riverside Park, and it will focus on birds you might see in the region, from ruby-throated hummingbirds (below) and chimney swifts to osprey and Canada geese. Wentzel is program director and naturalist at the Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Walking tours take place rain or shine — wear comfortable shoes and bring water if you’ll want it. Meet at the pavilion nearest the boat launch by the Fourth Street bridge. Plenty of parking is available in the lot that you can enter from Pennsylvania Avenue at Fourth.

Wondering what the interior of the Huntingdon County Courthouse looks like now that the whole second floor has been renovated? A free Huntingdon Landmarks walking tour at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, will take you through the new entrance on Washington Street, between Third and Second, and up to the spectacular main courtroom. Join Buildings & Grounds columnist Lawrence Biemiller for a special look at all the updates and improvements made to one of the county’s most notable interiors.

The free Thursday walking tour for July 23 will explore the ecology of Standing Stone Creek. Maggie Ritchey, watershed specialist with the Huntingdon County Conservation District, will lead the tour, which will begin at 10 a.m. at Detwiler Field, 400 Standing Stone Avenue in Huntingdon. (Standing Stone Avenue is also Route 26 — Detwiler is just north of the Calvary Christian Academy.) The forecast calls for Thursday to be sunny and delightful, so put on comfortable shoes and come learn!

On this week’s free Thursday evening walking tour, April Feagley will talk about notable Huntingdon residents who helped secure voting rights for American women in 1920, after decades of effort. Feagley, who is associate director of media relations at Juniata College, is also the author of “Silent Sentinel, Unfinished Battle: Anne Dorris Chisolm and the Fight for Women’s Suffrage.” The tour will begin at 6 p.m. in Merchants Park at Sixth and Penn Streets. Free parking is available in the municipal lot across Sixth Street. Tours take place rain or shine, but the forecast for Thursday calls for high temperatures, so remember to bring water!

The free walking tour for Thursday, July 9, will begin at 10 a.m. and will visit a number of public artworks in downtown Huntingdon. Leading the tour will be John Kearns, executive director of the Huntingdon County Arts Council. The tour will start in Merchants Park, at 6th and Penn Streets, with free parking available in the municipal lot across the street. Ever wonder who McAlevy’s Fort is named for? Find out all about William McAlevy — a Revolutionary War colonel who later led a rebellion against the adoption of the U.S. Constitution — on a free Huntingdon Landmarks walking tour on Thursday, June 25. The tour will start at 6 p.m. at Merchant’s Park, at Sixth and Penn Streets in Huntingdon, and will be led by Matt Price, a history buff who is a Huntingdon Landmarks board member and the executive director of the Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau. The tour will take place rain or shine. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water if you like!
