Great Start Livingston

Great Start Livingston This site was developed by a grant provided by the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential.

Great Start/Help Me Grow Livingston is a partnership of local community agencies, businesses, educators, and families working to improve Early Childhood outcomes for ages 0-5 in Livingston County. Our mission is to ensure a coordinated system of community resources and supports to assist all Livingston County families in providing a great start for children from prenatal through 8 years old.

What happens when someone drops their piece of the web?

Earlier this year, we asked our Great Start Collaborative partners that question during our Web of Support activity.

One partner answered: "I'd pick it up."

This year, our Livingston County community did exactly that.

At our September Great Start Collaborative meeting, we celebrated a year of partners continuing to show up for families and started looking ahead together.

Partners shared what they're seeing and hearing from families and helped us think about the next chapter of Great Start Livingston and Help Me Grow Livingston. We talked about family voice, easier access to resources, developmental screening, health care partnerships, connecting Help Me Grow with other community resources, and how we can continue building a community where families don’t have to figure everything out alone.

We also celebrated an incredible summer:
149 families served
303 children reached
37 community partners
1,041 books given to children and families
And a special focus on babies ages 0–12 months that helped us welcome more babies than ever before!

How will we know we're making the early childhood system easier for families to navigate and not simply doing more activities?

That’s the work we're excited to keep doing together.

Thank you to every family, community partner, volunteer, funder, and organization that continues to be part of this web.

Who knew reading was so fun?! Dare you to watch this and not smile!

Such a great example of "serve and return," which describes the back-and-forth interactions between a young child and a caring adult that helps to shape a healthy brain! 👶💕

It’s a bit of a quieter week with the holiday weekend and our local libraries preparing for fall, but that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of ways to stay busy! 😎

As we head into a new season, it’s a good reminder of just how important community is when we’re raising young children. It truly takes a village — the playdates, library programs, park meetups, friendly conversations, shared resources and familiar faces all help create connection and belonging. 💕

Here’s to another week of finding the fun in the everyday! 🍂

📚 2,020 BOOKS & COUNTING! 📚

We’re excited to share that we've distributed 2,020 books to young children throughout Livingston County so far in 2026! 🎉

Every book placed in a child’s hands is an opportunity to spark imagination, build early literacy skills, strengthen the parent-child bond and help children develop a lifelong love of reading ❤️

We are so grateful to our community partners, families, volunteers and everyone who helps make this work possible. Together, we’re putting books into homes and helping our youngest learners get a great start!

We can't wait to see what the next season brings 😎

That’s a wrap on 2026 Stories in Storefronts!

Yesterday, we took one last walk through downtown Howell to collect our Acoustic Rooster StoryWalk panels and to say THANK YOU to the people who helped bring the story to life all summer long.

We’re incredibly grateful to our 11 downtown storefront hosts who made room for a page of the story, and to Howell Main Street, whose partnership helped make the entire project possible.

Thank you to all the families who walked, read, talked, explored, and experienced the story together!

Did your family visit Stories in Storefronts or one of our other Livingston County StoryWalks? We’d love your feedback! You can also enter for a chance to win a book prize pack.

Share your StoryWalk feedback at the link in this post.

Thank you, Howell, for helping us make early literacy part of our community and for investing in our littlest learners!
