🇺🇸 IMPORTANT UPDATE – HOWELL TOWNSHIP INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION ~ JULY 15, 2026 🇺🇸

Due to the forecasted extreme heat, poor air quality caused by Canadian wildfire smoke, and out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our residents, the Howell Township Independence Day Celebration scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, 2026 has been canceled.

The combination of dangerously high temperatures and unhealthy air quality creates potentially hazardous conditions, especially for young children, older adults, and individuals with underlying health conditions. The safety of our attendees, volunteers, vendors, performers, first responders, and Township staff remains our highest priority.

We understand this news is disappointing, and we share that disappointment. However, we believe cancelling the celebration is the most responsible decision based on the expected conditions.

Thank you for your understanding, patience, and continued support. Please stay safe, limit outdoor activity if possible, stay hydrated, and take appropriate precautions during this period of extreme heat and poor air quality.

Storm Update from Mayor John Leggio
Over the last 24 hours, Howell Township was hit by a devastating storm that knocked out power to more than 12,000 homes, sparked fires that damaged homes, and brought down countless trees, blocking roads and disrupting traffic throughout our community.

As your Mayor, I spent much of the night and today out on our streets seeing the impacts firsthand. I want to thank our Police Department, Fire Departments, EMS, Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, and all of our first responders who have worked tirelessly to keep our residents safe. I also want to recognize the JCP&L and utility linemen and women who are working 16-hour shifts in difficult conditions to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

The Township remains in regular contact with JCP&L, and power continues to be restored as crews make steady progress despite the widespread damage.

While conditions have improved, we are not out of the woods yet. Additional severe storms are possible tonight, and our first responders will remain on duty throughout the night to respond wherever they are needed.

With dangerous heat expected to continue tomorrow, the Howell Township Senior Services Building will reopen as a cooling and charging center on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for residents and their pets.

I know this has been a difficult 24 hours, but please know that your Township employees and first responders have been working around the clock and will continue to be there for our community until this emergency has passed.
