Walk Wednesday: Meet Dynamic Duo

This week's Walk Wednesday spotlight is on Dynamic Duo, captained by Lucy Alvarez!

The Alvarez family — Lucy, her husband Juan, and their daughter Alessandra — has been part of the bleeding disorders community for years. But it wasn't until last year that they joined us for the Unite Walk for the first time. This year, Lucy decided it was time to take it a step further and start a team of her own.

"I'm connected to the bleeding disorders community because of my husband Juan and our daughter Alessandra. We decided to start our walk team to get our family more involved and to spread awareness to others."

And Lucy hasn't just started a team — she's gone all in. She joined our Unite Zoom with NBDF earlier this year to kick off the walk season, sat down with Juan to help him put his story into words, and used it — alongside photos of their family — to personalize the Dynamic Duo walk page. She's also stepped outside her comfort zone to share their fundraising efforts with friends, family, and on her own social media, asking the people who love her family to show up for them.

Her hope for all that effort? "To be able to reach others that don't know what hemophilia is, and raise money for the cause."

It hasn't all been easy. When asked about the biggest challenge of fundraising, Lucy was honest: "Finding people to give or to participate."

But for anyone on the fence about registering, Lucy has a simple message: "Just go for it. Take the leap and give it a try. You'll never know what you're truly capable of until you step outside your comfort zone and take that first chance on yourself. You might be surprised by the potential you have within you."

And what's her family's favorite part of walk day? Easy — the time together. "The family time we have and the activities."

Thank you, Lucy, Juan, and Alessandra, for turning years of community into action — and for showing the rest of us what it looks like to just go for it.
