Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA)

Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) The GHBA's mission is to provide advocacy, education, and meaningful services to benefit its members and the housing industry.

The Greater Houston Builders Association proudly represents all aspects of the residential building industry in the greater Houston area. GHBA is a trade organization whose members are involved in the development, homebuilding, and remodeling industry in 11 counties—Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Brazoria, Waller, Liberty, Wharton, Galveston, Matagorda, and now Austin and Colorado counties. Our mi

ssion is to be the voice of Houston’s residential construction industry, serving our members and the community by education and advocating professionalism and quality housing. The association interacts with the government, community and general public to enhance the business climate for its members, and to provide quality obtainable housing to the community it serves. The association is also active in community outreach and charitable events. In 2015, the 28,000 homes built in the Houston Metro area generated over $4.6 Billion into the local economy and created 84,000 jobs. Houston's residential housing market continues to be one of the most affordable and stable in the nation. Buying a new home in the Houston area is one of the smartest investments you will ever make for yourself and the local economy.

Check out our one and only EVP and CEO, Aimee Bertrand, on Builder Straight Talk! 🎙️ Learn more about her personal journey, her passion for workforce development, and her perspective on housing affordability, advocacy, and more. Be sure to tune in!

Every builder has a team behind them, trades, suppliers, inspectors, lenders, and somebody has to make sure their voice gets heard in the rooms where the real decisions happen.

On this episode of Builder Straight Talk, Michael sits down with Aimee Bertrand, CEO of the Greater Houston Builders Association, one of the largest builders associations in the country. Aimee grew up translating for her deaf mother, and that instinct for connecting people carried her from journalism school into the Mississippi state capitol, into Houston city council, and eventually into leading one of the most influential voices in home building.

We get into why workforce development has become her biggest passion, how a single phone call from a worried member turned into a real strategy for bringing new talent into the trades, and what it actually costs families when regulation quietly stacks up on the price of a home.

Aimee also opens up about something builders rarely talk about publicly, the pressure that comes with running a business alone, and why GHBA started a new gathering just to give builders a place to talk about what's actually weighing on them.

This one covers a lot of ground, and Aimee brings a perspective shaped by sitting right at the intersection of builders, policymakers, and the next generation of the trades.

On Thursday night, Conroe City Council rejected a proposal that would have required 65-foot lot width minimums on all new single-family homes. This shows the City's commitment to preserving housing choice to families at all stages of life. The GHBA thanks the Council for its leadership and our members that are committed to building within the City.

The woman, the myth, the legend, the Foundation Repair Lady! Today’s feature is none other than Sonora Storm! Here’s a look into her journey:

🏡 Her start in homebuilding: After 15 years in staffing, a recruiter presented an opportunity selling cast stone fireplace surrounds.

👷‍♀️ GHBA: Sonora started with GHBA 10 years ago. She got involved because her employer was already a GHBA member and suggested she go to a meeting. The rest is history!

🤝 Volunteer Leadership Positions: CBC Board Member since 2022 & Social Media Chair in 5th year; RMC Board Member since 2023 & Membership Chair in 4th year; GHBA Membership Committee Member since 2016; 2023 Membership Committee Chair; 2022–2025 PWB Mentorship Committee Member

🏆 Awards: 2023 & 2024 GHBA Presidential Citation; 2024 & 2025 RMC Presidential Citation; 2022 & 2023 Spike of the Year

🌟 Other recognitions: 2024- 2026 Distinguished GHBA Member; Professional Builder Partner Certification (PBP)

💙 Volunteer work outside GHBA: Sonora has been a board member, Gala Planning Committee & Media Coordinator, Gala Show Runner, and Coordinator for Special Events for Katy Angels, which provides food and essentials to those in need

😎 Free time: “My favorite is being with my husband – especially prayer time in the morning and being lazy in the evening. I enjoy reading my Bible, deep conversations about Catholicism and politics, movies, being at home, eating ice cream and great food (but not the cooking part), and decorating my home. I love the Trinity, family, dogs, horses, and making others happy.”

🏠 GHBA’s impact: "GHBA perfectly paved the way to an incredible career and employer. In 2022, I had my eyes on becoming the next Spike of the Year, and Lincoln Jacob Construction was one of my recruits. Unintentionally, I joined their team within a month of them joining and eventually became The Foundation Repair Lady. I was ready to retire until Lincoln Jacob Construction. I’m now the biggest GHBA fan. GHBA taught me the art of correctly networking (although I thought I already knew) & the value of connections. The friendships made here are bar none."

💼 Favorite committee: “Membership – A wealth of knowledge to gain, off-the-charts camaraderie, and phenomenal leadership by Cynthia Fagan and seasoned vets like Debbie Paige, Greg Madrey, D’Ann Brown and Kathleen Stadler, to name a few.”

💚 Favorite volunteer project: "The RMC Annual Garage Sale! I get to be one of the first to shop the great home stuff, hang with my GHBA friends, and all the hard work yields thousands of dollars to be given to the community."

🗓️ Favorite event: “2023 PRISM – it was our first big sponsorship (title sponsor), and our office team was on stage; plus, Jake’s wife and I were escorted to the stage by a man in an astronaut uniform to hand out awards. It was a sentimental evening with a special moment captured by a photographer – it’s plastered in my office on a big canvas.”

Navigating Traffic Impact Analyses (TIAs) can be a complex part of the development process.

At our August Developers Council meeting, Jack Shick Jr. and Sydnie Fiocca from DCCM shared their expertise on Traffic Impact Analyses and what developers need to know as they move projects through the permitting process.

The presentation broke down how TIAs evaluate the traffic generated by a proposed development, its impact on surrounding roads and intersections, and potential improvements that may be needed. Members also learned how TIA requirements can vary across Greater Houston, as well as what developers can do to help avoid permitting delays.

Thank you to Jack and Sydnie for sharing their insights and to everyone who joined us for another informative Developers Council meeting!

Be sure to register and join us next month as Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin and City of Houston Deputy City Engineer Johana Clark discuss upcoming changes to infrastructure design manuals.
