(The mother of Cyrus Carmack-Belton says her son’s death was racially motivated. She spoke out during a vigil for Cyrus in Columbia, SC- in front of the spot where he was killed in May 2023.

Rick Chow, a 61-year-old Asian former convenience store owner shot and killed 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, a Black teenager.

Chow and his son chased Cyrus for more than 100 yards before Chow fired the fatal shot. Investigators said Chow mistakenly believed Cyrus had stolen water bottles from the store, despite surveillance video showing he did not.

Chow’s attorneys say he fired after Cyrus allegedly pointed a gun at Chow’s son during the chase. )

• As Malcolm X reminded us, Black women are too often unprotected and disrespected. Cherrie Moore deserves REAL accountability, including more serious charges against the former Shelby (NC) Police Department officer. We must ensure no woman endures this kind of violence again.

• Civil rights attorney Ben Crump spoke in Shelby today alongside Cherrie Moore, whose arrest went viral after a doorbell video showed former officer Karson Hyder punching her 10 times. Crump called the beating “outright inhumane” and said Moore’s mental health issues “is not a crime.”

SO HARD TO GRASP… SO MUCH TIME LOST • After spending nearly 3 decades behind bars for a 1997 murder conviction, three men have officially been exonerated and reunited with their families after a judge overturned the case due to faulty evidence and unreliable testimony.

AND STILL • The gutting of the Voting Rights Act is a direct attack on democracy and the sacrifices of those who bled and died for equal justice. From Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Congressman John Lewis and Fannie Lou Hamer, we cannot dishonor their legacy by remaining silent. We don’t feel no ways tired — we will keep fighting to protect the sacred right to vote for every American.

• They walked in together… but not the same.

Ten young lives standing at the edge of a reality most people only hear about.
Burgundy jumpsuits on.
Not the clothes they came in with… but a glimpse of where the wrong decisions can take you.

Right before they stepped forward, they turned around—
One last look.
One last moment of freedom.
One last picture before facing the truth behind those walls of Folsom State Prison.

And in that moment, I told them:

Stay strong.
Pay attention.
Feel everything.
Because this is not a game… this is where choices lead.

This isn’t “Scared Straight.”
This is awareness.
This is reality.
This is prevention.

They didn’t go in as inmates…
They went in as students of consequence.

And when they walk back out—
they don’t just carry memories…
they carry understanding.

This is how we change direction.
This is how we break cycles.
This is how we build something different.
