πŸ¦… Icons of the Texas Coast β€” and Christmas Bay is Their Home

Two Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) stand proudly along the shoreline of Christmas Bay, and honestly? They belong here. This is exactly what a thriving, protected coastal ecosystem looks like.

Once driven to the edge of extinction by pesticide use, the Brown Pelican's return is one of the greatest conservation comebacks in American history β€” and Christmas Bay has played its part in that story. Our rich, productive waters teem with the fish and shelter these magnificent birds need to survive and raise their young. From resident pelicans and wading birds to thousands of migratory species passing through each season, Christmas Bay is a sanctuary unlike anywhere else on the Texas Gulf Coast.

And here's something that should make every Texan stand up straight with pride: Christmas Bay is recognized as the cleanest water on the upper Texas coast β€” despite being surrounded by oil refineries and chemical plants. Let that sink in. This bay, against all odds, has held on to its purity and its wildness. That is not luck. That is the result of relentless, passionate conservation work by people who love this place deeply and refuse to let it go.

This is YOUR bay. These are YOUR birds. And together, we are fiercely committed to keeping it that way.

For birders, photographers, and anyone who feels that pull toward wild, open water and sky β€” Christmas Bay will take your breath away. There is simply no place like it on the Texas coast, and that's not an accident. It's the result of years of dedicated conservation work by people who refuse to give up on this place.

Every healthy bay sustains healthy bird populations. Every volunteer hour, every cleanup, every voice raised in protection of this estuary means more mornings like this one β€” two pelicans resting easy, right where they belong.

🐟 A Tiny Fish with a Big Job

This fingerling speckled trout may only be a few inches long, but it represents the future of our Texas coastal fisheries.

Christmas Bay serves as one of the most important nursery and breeding habitats for speckled trout along the Texas coast. Its shallow seagrass beds, healthy marshes, and protected waters provide critical shelter and feeding grounds where young fish can grow before moving into larger bay systems.

Every juvenile trout that survives helps sustain recreational fishing, supports the coastal ecosystem, and contributes to the health of our bays for generations to come.

Protecting habitats like Christmas Bay isn't just about preserving a beautiful placeβ€”it's about safeguarding the life cycles that keep our coastal waters thriving.

The next time you catch a speckled trout, remember: it may have started its journey right here in Christmas Bay.

🎣 Now THAT'S what Christmas Bay is all about! πŸ”΄

Gui Trotti pulled this beauty out at Rattlesnake Point this week and we couldn't be more stoked. That's a healthy redfish from one of the most pristine bay systems on the upper Texas coast.

This is exactly what we're fighting for. Christmas Bay is a natural nursery for marine life, and when we keep it clean and protected, the fishing stays incredible. Every crab trap we pull, every cleanup crew that shows up, every dollar donated goes right back into making days like this possible.

Want in? Here's how to help:

βœ… Donate to fund our conservation work
βœ… Volunteer at our next cleanup event
βœ… Share this post and spread the word

Head to www.christmasbayfoundation.org to get involved. The bay needs you and so do the redfish! 🎣

This Earth Day, all 30 trail markers on the 19.1-mile Christmas Bay Paddling Trail got a full upgrade β€” new signage, built for the coast, built to last. Big thanks to our amazing volunteers and our partners at Texas Parks & Wildlife for making it happen. πŸŒŠπŸ™Œ

πŸŽ‰ WE GOT THE GREEN LIGHT! πŸŽ‰

The wait is over! Christmas Bay Foundation has officially received approval to move forward with an ADA-accessible viewing platform at the Drum Bay kayak launch, and we could not be more thrilled!

Architect Guillermo Trotti's design renderings give you a glimpse of what's coming: a beautiful, elevated platform where everyone: birders, wildlife lovers, families, and first-time visitors can soak in the breathtaking views of Drum Bay, catch a golden Texas sunset, watch the wildlife, and witness coastal habitat restoration in action. β™ΏπŸŒ…πŸ¦…

This is more than a structure, it's a statement that the Texas coast belongs to all of us.

πŸ”¨ We need YOUR help to make it happen. This project is community-powered, and we'll be announcing exciting fundraising opportunities very soon. Whether you donate, volunteer, or just spread the word, every bit of support moves us closer to breaking ground.

Stay tuned for updates as we kick off the next phase of planning and development. This is just the beginning. 🌿

🌎 This Earth Day, the Christmas Bay Foundation rolled up its sleeves to restore one of our most treasured natural assets β€” the paddling trail across TPWD/Christmas Bay and Drum Bay.

Through hands-on effort and a shared commitment to conservation, our team worked to restore and improve access for kayakers while protecting the surrounding habitat.

As part of this project, we installed 30 PVC trail markers across 19.1 miles of paddling trail, creating clearer navigation and a safer, more enjoyable experience on the water.

This project isn’t just about recreation β€” it’s about stewardship. Healthy, accessible waterways connect people to nature, support local wildlife, and preserve the ecological balance of the bay.

If you paddle Christmas Bay, you’ll see the difference β€” clearer paths, better flow, and a renewed connection to this incredible ecosystem.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and energy to making this happen.

Special Thank you to:
