It’s Banned Books Week and our report is out! They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes book bans. Texas leads the country in removing & restricting books in libraries. And before the haters tell us “they’re not banned, you can buy them on Amazon,” we’d like to remind you that these books are in fact banned from school library shelves. Libraries are about access. Any time the government starts limiting access to certain ideas because the people in power don’t agree with those ideas, citizens should be VERY concerned. Check out PEN America’s latest report on book bans in the United States. Thanks to 75 volunteers and a massive public information request project, we were able to more broadly capture the impact of harmful laws and local policies resulting in the restriction or removal of thousands of books across our state. We shared that information with PEN to help ensure their data reflects the reality of what we are facing in our communities.

And we know our efforts only scratch the surface. It turns out tracking book bans and censorship is really hard. 🤪

Remember Banned Books Week is not a celebration. It’s a call to action. Get informed- then join us in getting to work fighting for the freedom to read wherever you live.

Friday, October 9
