2026 PVAMU RESEARCH WEEK

Graduate students are not always able to make it to the main campus to participate in programming, so we brought PVAMU Research Week to the Northwest Center.

Students presented their final research findings across a range of critical topics, including:

* Campus-funded childcare
* Best practices to address homelessness
* Post-disaster housing
* Mental health in K–12 athletics
* Food access in Royal ISD
* Literacy rates in Waller County
* Health access in Houston's Gulfton
* Barriers to Revitalization in Hiram Clarke
* Halting displacement in Houston’s Third Ward

These are the issues shaping our communities and our students are stepping up with thoughtful, research-driven solutions.

Congratulations to Anthony Barnes and Uzoma Amuneke on completing their candidacy for graduation in May 2026.

COMMUNITY RESEARCH

Peer groups were in full stride tonight as students worked through their abstracts for PVAMU Research Week.

Their topics—homelessness, human trafficking, housing affordability, youth food insecurity, and more—reflect the urgency of the world they’re preparing to change.

Big dreams. Fifteen weeks. This is how emerging scholars are made.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN + MAJOR GIFTS

Students are deep in the work this semester. They’re developing a $50 million proposal for a project of their choosing—complete with a major gifts strategy, board governance structure, leadership gift philosophy, and a full donor plan.

Class was intense last night, and let’s just say the students may or may not have held an impromptu vote to extend their assignment deadline by three days… all in the name of getting it right.

The vote passed.

Excellence isn’t accidental.

Juanita Breedlove recently completed her nonprofit skills certification through a small business program and was acknowledged by Austin Mayor Kirk Watson for her achievement.

Juanita is a powerful example of how our students lean into their entrepreneurial skills and talents to strengthen communities. She is the founder of Breedlove Education and Empowerment, an organization dedicated to training professionals in the art and science of styling textured hair.

We love to see our students leading, innovating, and creating impact.
