October 4th marked another year of life, purpose, and blessings for our very own Brother Lorenzo Jones! 👏🏽🎉

On behalf of the Houston Breakfast Club, I want to take a moment to recognize a brother who brings more than experience to the table. He brings VISION, INNOVATION, WISDOM, and ACTION!

Brother Lorenzo has played a valuable role in helping elevate our organization through his knowledge of marketing, branding, and creative strategy. His fresh perspectives and innovative thinking continue to strengthen our presence and help position the Houston Breakfast Club for the future.

But what I appreciate most about Lorenzo goes beyond his professional expertise.

It's his brotherhood. His wisdom. His willingness to share knowledge. And his genuine commitment to seeing other brothers succeed.

As President, one thing I've come to appreciate is that strong organizations aren't built by titles alone. They're built by individuals who understand that their gifts carry greater value when used to uplift others.

Brother Lorenzo represents that principle.

He reminds us that innovation moves organizations forward, wisdom provides direction, and brotherhood keeps us connected.

Lorenzo, thank you for bringing your talents, your perspective, and, most importantly, your authentic self to the Houston Breakfast Club. Your contributions are recognized, your friendship is valued, and your presence makes our brotherhood stronger.

Brother Ron dedicated 10 years of service as President of the Houston Breakfast Club, demonstrating leadership, commitment, and a genuine passion for brotherhood and community.

As the current President, I recognize and appreciate the foundation you helped build, the relationships you strengthened, and the legacy you continue to carry forward.

Leadership is not measured by how long we hold a title, but by the lives we impact and the legacy we leave behind.

At 76 years young, Brother Ron continues to remind us that brotherhood, service, and purpose have no expiration date!

Congratulations to our Houston Breakfast Club Treasurer, Darryl Smith, on being sworn in as an officer with the HCU Police Department! 👏🏾

On Sept. 21, Chief John Karshner administered the oath in Belin Chapel. Chief Karshner called police work a “calling” that requires courage, integrity, and sound judgment. Daryl already lives those values. We see it in how he serves this club, and now he carries that same standard into protecting and serving the HCU community.

Daryl, we are proud of you. Thank you for answering the call and for the example you set. The Houston Breakfast Club stands behind you.

Chief John Karshner swore in new officer Daryl Smith and returning officer Chris Hess on Sept. 21 in Belin Chapel. During the ceremony, Chief Karshner described police work as a “calling” that requires courage, integrity and sound judgment.

“We are grateful for their commitment to service and wish them every success as they begin this important calling,” said Karshner.

Honoring the Legacy of the Houston Breakfast Club 🕊️

Quietly Making a Difference since 1986.

For nearly four decades, the Houston Breakfast Club has stood as a testament to fellowship, service, and community. Today, we pause to honor the founders, leaders, and legacy that made us who we are.

It began in 1986, when nine men gathered at the home of George McElroy for Saturday-morning coffee and fellowship.
After a year of meeting faithfully, they chose to organize—with George McElroy as their first president—and the Houston Breakfast Club was born. We honor those founding nine:

Walter Rasmus • Milton Larkin • Harold Evans • LaVan Burrell • Fred Williams • Joe Holiday • James Washington • Robert Shaw • George McElroy

In those early years, the men met in one another's homes, where their wives prepared breakfast as they held their meetings—and each Christmas, the club honored those wives with a celebration of gratitude. The club was officially organized under the laws of the State of Texas on September 18, 1989. From that fellowship grew a devoted brotherhood of Christian men committed to the betterment of our youth and community, providing scholarships to young men and women pursuing higher education.

We recognize Past President Ronald "Ron" Barrs—a proud graduate of Texas Southern University, an entrepreneur, and a devoted family man married for more than 54 years.
Ron led this club as President for ten years and remains an active member today. He is a man who leads with leadership in everything he touches.

We honor Past Treasurer Johnny Gentry—known to many of us simply as "Mr. T-Bone." For more than twenty years, Johnny has faithfully served this club.
A retired counselor and peace officer, and a statesman for the State of Texas, he has done tremendous work across our state and around the world.

We celebrate Secretary Eddie Henderson—a proud Texas Southern University graduate known for his deep community involvement through his church and his gift for the theater arts.
Twenty-plus years later, Eddie is still serving faithfully as our "human recorder," the steady hand who captures our history in the minutes and keeps this organization on course.

These men remind us that legacy is not built overnight. It is built by people who serve faithfully, year after year, without ever seeking the spotlight.

As we honor where we've been, we look to where we're going. It is fitting that these tributes were presented by our current officers—President Leotis Hightower and Vice President James Riggins—a passing of the torch from one generation of servant-leaders to the next. With the dedication of all our current members, the Houston Breakfast Club continues to evolve into a prestigious organization—serving and celebrating graduating seniors, providing scholarships, and offering mentorship to the next generation of leaders.

To the founders and leaders who came before us: thank you.
To our current members: the work continues.

🎉✨ 91 YEARS. UNDEFEATED. ✨🎉

Let me tell you what I witnessed today.

I was in a room full of real ones. Family. Community.
Brotherhood. And at the center of it all a man whose very existence is a sermon.

Mr. Johnny D. Gentry Jr. 91 years old and still the most powerful presence in the room.

This wasn't just a birthday celebration. This was a legacy declaration.
A living, breathing reminder that when a man anchors his life in God, in service, and in purpose time cannot diminish him. It honors him.

Brother Gentry is what a statesman looks like.
What a patriarch looks like.
What faithfulness over decades looks like.
He didn't just show up for himself he showed up for his community, his family, and every generation watching him walk.

I want to take a moment and personally honor the Gentry family for opening your arms and allowing the Houston Breakfast Club to fellowship and stand alongside you in this sacred celebration. That kind of generosity reflects exactly who Mr. Gentry is because great men raise families that lead with love.

You didn't have to include us. But you did. That means everything.

To the Houston Breakfast Club this is why we gather.
This is why brotherhood matters.
We don't just network.
We honor legacy together.

To Mr. Johnny D. Gentry Jr. Sir, you are the standard.
