Blodgett Urban Gardens was created to address the problem of food deserts, particularly the one located in the Third Ward area. According to the United States Department of Agriculture food deserts are urban or rural towns without ready access to fresh, health, and affordable food. The Blodgett Urban Garden is a community Garden provided by Texas Southern University to not only provide fresh fruit
and vegetables but to also to provide a space to teach hands on techniques about gardening in an urban setting, which includes gardening with limited space. The Blodgett Urban Gardens also provide a research facility for Texas Southern University in the studies of environmental sciences.
