Leela made it through surgery!

This squishy girl was found as a “stray” and brought in to the shelter. No microchip, never claimed. But when we brought her in for surgery, they noticed something crazy.

We took her in for enucleation (eye removal) for the eye that was injured and ruptured and asked them to spay at the same time. Well, surprise she was already spayed. A butchered spay. Multiple hernias, c-section scarring, and extra tissue left over. She was in surgery for over 3 hours to try and repair all the damage that was done. We might not know for sure who did this, but we can make guesses about “at-home” and cheap c-section and surgeries done by irresponsible breeders. But what matters now is Leela is safe.

Leela is now home with her fosters recovering. She had a rough first night, but the pain meds finally kicked in, and she’s resting comfortable now. Time to relax and heal, sweet mama. You’re safe now.

Leela’s procedure total was right around $2,300. We have a little more to go to cover those costs, so every dollar of a donation is so helpful! Thank you for everyone who has supported her so far.

A true fairytale ending/new beginning for our Edna girl.

Edna was brought into our local city shelter with masses hanging from her body. Her foster stepped up, and we were able to bring her into safety. After many, many vet appointments and all the medical care, she has blossomed. As a senior girl with some chronic medical, we weren’t sure how quickly she would be adopted. But then her family saw her.

Her new family flew Edna with her foster to them, and her dad was waiting with flowers and gifts. They are experienced with adopting medical seniors, and Edna joins a paralyzed pug and a blind cocker spaniel. She is already being treated like the queen she is, and we couldn’t be happier.

Meet Leela! Every time we hear a dog that was found as a “stray” has multiple c-section scars, our hearts break all over again. How can someone use such a sweet girl to pump out puppies and make them money, then turn around and not care at all for her? We will never understand the cruelty, but we will keep letting our hearts break to show them the good life.

This sweet girl found herself in a tough spot as a stray. She was seen wandering with this obvious major eye injury and marks on her head and was taken to the local shelter. As a medical case, she was quickly listed as “rescue only” and was on the euthanasia list. But her luck turned around when our foster saw her plea. Because now she’s safe with us!

Leela heads to our vet this week to get a full exam and have the eye removed. Because the eye is ruptured, this is going to be the best option for her. She will be so much more comfortable without it and will make the cutest little one-eyed girl.

There’s nothing better than an adoption update. Snickers was a mange puppy at our local Houston shelter back in 2023, but look at him now!

We pulled Snickers from the shelter into a local foster home to recover and get medical care. Once he was healthy, he transported to our rescue partners Gals Best Pal where he was adopted by an incredible family. Over the years, he has been with them for every vacation and life event from getting engaged to their marriage. Seeing our pups spoiled and loved is what it’s all about. Thank you to everyone who was a part of Snickers story and to all the adopters who make rescue so worth it.

As fosters, we take on cases without knowing what we will get. And sometimes those dogs have a tougher time. Layla adapted so quickly to her foster home. So quickly and so well that we didn’t realize she’d become protective of them, too. That led to a minor bite case back in December and now we have a dog that is not receiving any adoption interest. Dogs communicate the best they can. They show us their discomfort with body language like lip licking and whale eyes, then growling, then sometimes leading to a bite. Now that we know Layla’s protective tendencies, she is very easy to manage. She has not had another incident since the one in December. She has always been a good girl at the vet. She did well at boarding. And her foster is able to have friends over as long as they don’t rush in and immediately try to go to pet Layla. Her perfect home would be one with less people coming and going often. She loves to play with other dogs and even licks and plays gently with adult cats and kittens in the foster home. So if you’re looking for a loyal companion who will love you so much to join your pack or be your one and only, this is your girl.

Being a pittie mix is hard enough in the rescue world right now to find an adopter, but we are here for Layla. And we are so determined to find her a home! Layla is located in Houston, TX, but we are willing to travel to find her home (I’ve even driven to Buffalo, NY, for an adoption before)!

Teddy boy had his first vet visit.

We are going to do everything we can to try to help him keep that front leg because we know it’s a tough one to lose for a large breed. But we aren’t sure what the outcome will be yet. He is safe and cozy at his foster home now with Caitie’s Foster Fam and on very good pain meds. He gives unlimited kisses, and we think he’s just extra thankful to be able to finally relax.

Meet our newest intake Theodore, lovingly called Teddy or Teddy Bear.

This poor pup was spotted as a stray wandering with an injured leg. He was able to be trapped and taken to the shelter. His leg injury is severe, and we will be taking him directly to the vet as soon as we get him today. The shelter staff said he’s the sweetest thing, and we can’t wait to love on him!
