Earlier this week, if you were traveling near the I-10 Katy/ I-1610 West Loop interchange, you may have received a "Public Safety Alert" regarding a major freeway closure due to an 18 wheeler incident.

The alert was made possible by a system TxDOT uses called HELP (Highway Emergency Link Platform) Alerts and Commercial Vehicle Emergency Alerts to provide timely, geo-targeted communication during major incidents and hazardous conditions.

HELP Alerts utilizes FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) to distribute Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) in compliance with federal requirements. It sends geo-targeted WEA messages to all mobile devices in an impacted area. The system requires no mobile app or prior registration.

HELP Alerts are activated when all lanes of a major state roadway is closed for two hours or more and the impacts could potentially impact a large number of motorists.

TxDOT in the Houston District will still utilize other resources such as social media, www.drivetexas.org, www.houstontrantar.org and the many message signs along major highways but HELP alerts provides another tool to get key messages out in a timely manner to motorists.
