Opening for this month’s CreativeMornings talk is Max High. 🎶 Max High is a multi-instrumentalist of Japanese-Filipino-French descent, currently living and working in Honolulu. Each year since the pandemic hit the world in 2020, High has used his ongoing Recordings series as a process of archiving sessions and improvisations into mixtapes as a way to keep track of his creative time.

A second-generation Mexican American originally raised in San Diego, Gutierrez grew up immersed in food culture—spending weekends in Los Angeles with her family who ran a mariscos food truck. When she is not frying churros, she is out surfing, swimming, practicing her handstands or making food at home.

Setting the tone this May. 🎶
We’re thrilled to welcome Sean Cleland to the CreativeMornings Honolulu stage.
A three-time Nā Hoku Hanohano Award winner for Alternative Album of the Year — 2019, 2021, and 2022 — Sean is the kind of performer you want in a room full of creative people on a Friday morning. His sound moves between introspective and refined to fiery and emotional, sometimes within the same song. Pop hooks, electric guitar, blues, R&B, jazz, and soul — he’s synthesized all of it into something that feels entirely his own.

Come early. There’s nothing like starting your day with someone performing at this level.

This one has a jaw-some mission. 🦈
We’re so happy to welcome Fintastic Friends to the CreativeMornings Honolulu vendor floor this May — and the connection to our speaker makes it even better.
Fintastic Friends is the brainchild of a former student of Chae Ho Lee’s, born from a genuine love of sharks and a real desire to change how the world sees them. The brand uses adorable art to tell a better story — turns out when you make something irresistible, people actually start paying attention. 10% of every sale goes biannually to the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund, their conservation partner doing real work in our ocean.
There’s something pretty special about a speaker whose students go on to build things like this. Come find their table, pick something up, and see what it looks like when great design meets a cause worth defending.

Meet our May speaker. ✨
Chae Ho Lee has spent his career moving between worlds. With an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and years of practice across New York City, London, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the Pacific Rim — including more than six years living and working in the Middle East — he’s built a practice as wide-ranging as his passport.
For the past two decades, he’s channeled all of that into the classroom as a Professor of Design at UH Mānoa, where he earned a UHM Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching in 2011. His work spans branding, advertising, illustration, lettering, publication design, and UX/UI, with clients that include The Walt Disney Company, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Washington Post, and Honolulu Magazine.
On May 29, he’s bringing a career’s worth of global perspective to our stage.

This month is a first for us. CREATE was chosen in collaboration with our global partner Adobe — the first time in CreativeMornings history that we’ve co-selected a theme with a partner, and that felt worth sitting with. Because it speaks to something we’ve always believed: everyone is creative. Adobe believes it too. Together, we’re here to give you the motivation and accountability to take whatever’s been living in your head and actually make it real.
Even better — there’s a Release Day. May 29th is when we all finally share the thing we’ve been quietly working on. Create is about making something. Release Day is about letting it breathe.

Who you are and how you are in the world matters deeply. Find the resonance in your communities and guard those things tenaciously. Hold spirit — because without spirit, nothing exists.
Hawaiian artist and educator Meleanna Meyer reminded us that creativity isn’t just expression. It’s medicine. It’s how we repair, reconnect, and remember who we are.
