Transform Hawaii Government: The Movement

Transform Hawaii Government: The Movement Vision: A delivery-driven government that enables people. The coalition is not affiliated with any government entity or political party.

From redundant manual entry of data to five part carbon copy forms, the State of Hawai‘i uses business processes and technology that are decades old and painfully outdated. Coupled with reduction in staffing levels over the last decade, state employees do not have the tools to do their jobs as well as they can and citizens are not receiving the quality services they deserve. In July 2011, the stat

e hired its first-ever Chief Information Officer (CIO), Sanjeev “Sonny” Bhagowalia, to provide a clear and cohesive vision for moving from manual processes to implementing best practices utilized in state and local governments across the country. This effort is not just about investing in technology; it is about changing the processes by which government services are delivered. In many cases, outdated processes can be improved with technological solutions; in other cases, changes in the physical process may be all that is needed. Leveraging data gathered in a series of audits of the state’s information management and delivery of services, the CIO and Office of Information Management and Technology (OIMT) unveiled in October 2012 the Business and Information Technology/Information Resource Management Transformation Plan as a roadmap to move Hawaii into the 21st century. Recognizing the widespread benefits of the State of Hawai‘i’s effort to improve the way it provides services to citizens and in anticipation of the release of the “Transformation Plan,” community leaders came together in May 2012 to lend their support. Transform Hawai‘i Government - The Movement is the name of the coalition that was formed, in partnership with the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, to solicit public input, build broad support and hold the state accountable for making progress in the transformation initiative. The Hawai‘i Community Foundation has generously provided backbone organizational support for Transform Hawai‘i Government – The Movement, including development of the group’s logo, website and a video to educate the public. The Foundation believes in equal access to state services for all residents and recognizes the substantial improvements that the state’s Transformation Plan will make by streamlining its internal business processes and making more services available online. Not all of Transform Hawai‘i Government – The Movement’s supporters agree on every issue; there will be times when specific projects or initiatives proposed by the state are backed by some and opposed by others. However, we are all united in our belief that there exist opportunities for supporting better state government for Every Citizen, through Every Service, on Every Island. AI is becoming a bigger part of classrooms across Hawaii, but schools are taking different approaches to the rapidly evolving technology. While some educators are incorporating AI tools into lessons and helping students learn responsible use, others are limiting technology in the classroom amid concerns about cheating and critical thinking. From preschoolers evaluating ChatGPT responses to students building AI-powered projects and learning coding and data science, the conversation is shifting from whether AI belongs in schools to how it should be used. : Last month AI disrupted a Glendale Community College graduation ceremony in Arizona after a new AI name-reading system mispronounced and skipped some graduates’ names, leading to a pause in the ceremony. College President Tiffany Hernandez apologized and cited technical difficulties, and after crowd frustration, affected graduates were eventually allowed to walk again with a human reading their names instead. : The California State University system is doubling down on AI, expanding its partnership with OpenAI in a move to become the nation’s first AI-powered university system. While CSU leaders say tools like ChatGPT Edu are essential for preparing students for an AI-driven workforce, many students and faculty remain skeptical about AI’s impact on creativity, job security, ethics and the environment. A recent university survey found widespread use of AI across campuses — but also growing concerns about overreliance on the technology in education. : One of the earliest examples of artificial intelligence in education is making headlines again. Leachim, a 6-foot-tall teaching robot that worked with fourth grade students in the Bronx in the early 1970s, is headed to auction more than 50 years after first entering the classroom. Created by inventor Michael J. Freeman, the robot could personalize lessons, interact with multiple students at once and became known for its “ceaseless patience” with kids learning at different speeds. The auction will include Leachim’s original prototypes, patents and inventor notes, offering a rare look back at the early roots of AI in education. Getting ready to travel this summer? REAL ID was designed to make travel easier and more secure, but some newly issued Hawaii driver’s licenses and state IDs are experiencing a barcode glitch that causes scanning issues at TSA checkpoints and other locations. DMV officials say only a limited number of IDs are affected by a production irregularity and are replacing defective cards at no cost, while transportation authorities work on system upgrades expected to roll out later this year.
