Pop-Up Makeke, an online marketplace featuring Hawaii vendors first launched by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement in response to the pandemic last year, is reopening for business on July 1.

In 2020, Pop-Up Makeke generated more than $2 million in revenue for struggling local businesses. The newest installment of the marketplace will focus on helping participating businesses become self-sustainable and establish prominent global footprints, according to officials with CNHA.

🥡 Royal Kitchen 🥡

One way that we show love or aloha for our family members, friends and co-workers is to share food with them. Working downtown for many years, it was always a great day when a hot box of manapuas would show up in the break room!

One of our favorite places to get manapua is Royal Kitchen in downtown Honolulu. They are still doing it as they did decades ago - family owned and many hard working, long time employees making the best baked manapuas and other treats every day.

Biting into a steamy hot baked char siu goodness, you taste the traditions baked into the dough. Love emanating from the savory sweet pork filling. A salty and slimy pork hash, dunked in a snorting mustard soy sauce wakens the palate and nostrils. Loud whap whap whaps of the cleaver as large saucy chunks of roast pork are cut on the sycamore like stump. Eating freshly roasted char siu in a plastic bag, grabbing handfuls of porky goodness!

We are very proud to support this amazing locally owned Hawaii business, as it doesn’t have an active Instagram page. We made this reel for the Heart and Soul 2021 Reel contest to help promote this contest and businesses. Please always support Hawaii! 🤙🏾

From the story:

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Restaurants in the State of Hawaii are having a difficult time finding employees, despite 58,750 residents being unemployed.

Hawaii’s unemployment rate, which was above 20% in 2020, has dropped down to 9% in March 2021. The figure is still 3% above the national average.

“It’s been a little rough honestly,”Mangiamo by 604 general manager Sarah Lovetre said. “Usually whenever we put out a job offering we usually get about 15 (applications) for each position and now it’s been about closer to 3 or 4.”

A sobering reminder...the COVID effects and closures are not over...

FROM THE ARTICLE:

Kabuki Restaurant on Kapiolani Boulevard has closed after nearly four decades in business.

The Japanese eatery opened in 1984 and specialized in sushi, as well as dishes such as hot pot and misoyaki butterfish.

Amid Covid-19, the restaurant had been operating reduced hours and offering takeout only. It served its last meals on Sunday.

“It has been an honor to serve you and your loved ones here since 1984,” the restaurant wrote on its Facebook account last month. “Arigato gozaimasu. Mahalo. Thank you.”

HONOLULU () — Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said he will do what he can to keep the county on Tier Three of its reopening strategy.

He said making modifications to the tiers can be an option.

Currently, cases need to average below 50 in order to prevent going backwards, something the mayor strongly opposes.

“I’ve asked for modifications for Tier Three to have it be 50 to 100 cases, I think we can stay in that range with a positivity rate of two and a half,” Blangiardi said. “The notion of going back to Tier Two is something I am dead set against as mayor, and I will be on record saying that.”

Governor David Ige said he is open to the idea of modifications to the emergency order covering Oahu.

While the local establishment shutters its doors today, the will love on.

PER THE ARTICLE:

Love’s Bakery is slated to close Wednesday after nearly 170 years in business, but not all of the brand’s baked goods will disappear from local store shelves.

A big family-owned bakery business headquartered in Oregon has arranged to keep making sliced bread and buns under the Love’s name for distribution throughout Hawaii.

Portland-based Franz Family Bakery, also known as United States Bakery, announced Monday that it has acquired a license to produce the Love’s-branded items on the mainland for Hawaii.
