💥Share your input regarding the next Honolulu Chief of Police!

🚨A national search for a Chief of Police for the Honolulu Police Department is underway following the resignation of former Chief, Arthur “Joe” Logan, last year.

👤The Chief of Police is appointed by the Honolulu Police Commission which is made up of seven volunteers appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.

❓🔍The Honolulu Police Commission, in partnership with Public Sector Search & Consulting, Inc., is seeking community feedback to gain a deeper understanding of the qualities and priorities residents believe are most important for the next Chief of Police.

Though we cannot undo the harm caused by this license plate, we are glad to see that steps are being taken to correct the wrongful approval of this suggestive, hurtful message that’s been driven through our communities; and to make sure nothing like it happens again.

Mahalo to the residents, , and who pursued this matter! 🙌🏻🙌🏼🙌🏽🙌🏾🙌🏿

The Honolulu City Council authorizes city attorneys to move forward with lawsuit against the owner of the recalled “FCKBLM” vanity license plate. The driver has refused to return the plates

“The City and County of Honolulu has spent more than $18 million to settle police-related lawsuits and claims alleging misconduct over the past decade — outpacing numerous mainland cities of similar or larger size.”

We should not have to worry about police engaging in criminal acts and we definitely should not have to foot the bill for police misconduct. But we do. Will the Police Commission address this?

Meanwhile, the officers involved in the cases have faced mixed consequences.

An example of the racism and anti-Blackness in Hawai‘i. Not only did someone feel comfortable and proud to express this violent and harmful message for anyone to see, but also this vulgar license plate “FCKBLM” was approved and allowed on our roads.

If you have the capacity, consider submitting a complaint (see 8th slide). People should not be comfortable spreading their hate and we must not tolerate it.

Sorry to those who have had to witness and experience such disgusting displays of racism and bigotry—we know this is just one example. Mahalo to everyone exposing and calling out the dangerous anti-Black sentiment here in what is called the “Aloha State.”

Apparently the DMV has supposedly recalled the license plate and is prohibiting vehicle registration with the license plate, so this is now in the hands of HPD.

🗣In the words of ,
“I hope we can all remember that this story is not just about license plates, but about hate and the violence that always follows. The rising anti-blackness in Hawai‘i is real.”

Folks have been on TOP of exposing this! This post is aimed merely to help amplify. Please feel free to share and remind others that Hawai‘i is not a racial paradise.

The community wants change, but our “public leaders” continue to actively resist it, preventing genuine public participation and keeping the public in the dark—contradictory to the spirit of Hawai‘i’s Sunshine Law.

Our statement on the HPD chief hiring process, which concluded yesterday (May 23, 2022) with the Honolulu Police Commission’s selection of Arthur “Joe” Logan as the next chief of the Honolulu Police Department.

A media outlet asked us to “provide reaction” via Zoom. We submitted this written statement.

[Image description: Red slide with HPC Taskforce logo faint in the background. Light yellow text reads “STATEMENT Re: HPD Chief Hiring Process.” The HPC Taskforce logo sits left of the date May 23, 2022. Smaller white text below reads “While the 2022 chief hiring process was a vast improvement from previous chief hiring processes, there was no truly meaningful community participation.” This is a quote from the written statement which can be seen in full on Slide 2. Slides 3-7 are excerpts (in order) of the statement, just in larger text on red background.]
