Hollis Historical Society

Hollis Historical Society The Hollis Historical Society acquires and preserves historical souvenirs and data in order to stimulate an interest in the history of Hollis, NH.

In 1949, the ladies of the Hollis chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution discussed the possibility of forming an organization in Hollis with the Selectmen of the town that would have the responsibility of preserving the artifacts and the moments of the history relating to the town for the future. The same year, there was a warrant relating to form a committee for this purpose, and, in

1951, the library was selected to store any important items that were accumulated. When Elizabeth M. Proctor, a descendant of the noted Moses Proctor of Proctor Hill in Hollis, died in 1957, she left a legacy to the town of Hollis, including furnishings that belonged to her family, and a sum of nearly $7,000 to preserve them. As a result of this inheritance, on June 13, 1958, twenty-five residents met and unanimously voted to form the Hollis Historical Society. Our two museums host permanent exhibits of Hollis history as well as a variety of changing theme exhibits.

THREE HOLLIS MUSEUMS will be open this Sunday June 7, from 1-4 PM. The ALWAYS READY ENGINE HOUSE museum at 26 Main Street in Hollis. Featured is a new exhibit celebrating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. The building also houses the old town hearse, a hand drawn fire engine from 1834 and many permanent exhibits, as well as the lock-up cell in the basement which is a fun photo opportunity.
The 1806 GOULD TAVERN is a fabulous private museum next door at 28 Main Street and the town’s first post office. This old recreated tavern/store/post office was a stop on the stage coach route from Massachusetts northward. The museum was recently featured on WMUR’s Chronicle program.
The OLD PINE HILL SCHOOLHOUSE, an authentic one-room district school, at 69 Ranger Road will also be open 1-4 PM.

If anyone is looking for a major restoration project, this house in South Windsor, Connecticut just went on the market. Shown in the late 1930s and in 2025, this house has unfortunately been vacant for many years, and the area around the house is now overgrown with trees and bushes. It is a classic saltbox-style colonial, and it is located on a street that is lined with many wonderful examples of colonial architecture. It was supposedly built in 1697, although this date seems dubiously early. Based on the interior and exterior architectural features, a mid-1700s date seems more likely.

The address is 1047 Main Street in South Windsor, if anyone is interested in learning more and possibly trying to save this important historic house!
