What a night. 💚

Last night, surrounded by so many of the people who helped make it possible, we officially cut the ribbon on Beaver Brook’s new Education Building.

Since we were founded, Beaver Brook has been a place where people come to discover the natural world, understand their place in it and follow their curiosity. Now, that work finally has a home that reflects just how special it is.

To the donors, volunteers, partners, board members, staff, educators, families, and friends who have been part of this journey: thank you. This incredible milestone belongs to you! We cannot wait to watch the next generation pass through these doors.

A special thank you to The Greater Merrimack-Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce for helping us celebrate this very special grand opening!

We have a few short-term volunteer opportunities coming up at Beaver Brook, and we’d love your help!

📄 Office Shredding
We’re looking for one person to come into the office and help with paper shredding. Approximately 2 hours and a great way to lend a hand without committing to a big project!

🚗 Parking Assistance – September 1
We need two volunteers to help direct cars to parking areas on September 1 from about 4:00–5:30 p.m. Easy, straightforward, and an important part of helping things run smoothly!

🌲 Maple Hill Ridge Trail – Challenge Course Cleanup
A couple of volunteers are needed to rake out the challenge course areas along the Maple Hill Ridge Trail. All tools will be provided, and you can complete this project on your own schedule, as long as it’s finished by September 13.

Fall migration is one of nature’s great shows, and it’s happening right here at Beaver Brook.

As the seasons change, thousands of birds are on the move. Join us for six guided morning walks and learn how to spot them by their songs, markings, flight patterns, and behavior.

Led by Ben Thyng, each week we’ll explore a different Beaver Brook trail and habitat, looking for warblers, vireos, sparrows, and other seasonal visitors while learning more about the incredible journeys these birds make.

You don’t need to be an experienced birder. If you’ve ever stopped on a trail because you heard a bird and wondered “What was that?”, this is a great place to start.

Bring your binoculars, lace up your walking shoes, and come discover fall migration with us.

We have limited openings in our 4-year-old program with both 2-day and 3-day options available.

🌲 Give your child the gift of time outdoors—time to explore, wonder, get muddy, ask questions, build confidence, make friends, and connect with the natural world.

At Beaver Brook, the forest is our classroom. Children spend their days hiking trails, discovering what lives beneath logs, creating with nature, learning through play, and experiencing the joy that comes from simply being outside.

✨Childhood is short. Let them spend more of it outdoors.

Have you ever seen a pile of muck at the edge of a wetland and wondered why it was there? You were likely looking at a beaver scent mound!

Beavers drag mud, leaves, and sticks up from the wetland into piles and then rub oil from their castor sacs, called castoreum, onto these piles. This is a type of olfactory (chemical) communication and is how beavers mark their territory. This lets dispersing juveniles or other beavers searching for new territory know that this area is taken.

Research has shown that beaver colonies in close proximity to other colonies will create more of these mounds, meaning they can be used as a good indicator of beaver population density. One of our wildlife cameras captured this beaver in the process of marking its scent mound.

You don’t have to be a runner to run the trails at Beaver Brook. Couch to Trail is a six-week, beginner-friendly program designed to help you build endurance, confidence, and a love for moving outdoors.

With coach Amanda Cabrera guiding the way, you’ll learn how to approach trail running safely, navigate the terrain, and find a pace that works for you. No pressure to be fast. No need to be experienced. Just a willingness to lace up and give it a try.
And the best part? You’ll be doing it surrounded by the beauty of Beaver Brook’s trails.

We had an unexpected visitor in the office last week!

A milk snake decided to make a surprise appearance, slithering its way down the hallway. Our little visitor got a helping hand from Ben back to the great outdoors!

A few fun facts about our little visitor:

🐍Milk snakes are nonvenomous and are excellent at keeping rodent populations in check.

🏡 In New Hampshire, they can be found in woodlands, fields, barns, and other places where small rodents are plentiful.

🌙 They’re secretive and mostly active at night, so spotting one in broad daylight — or cruising down an office hallway — is a pretty fun wildlife encounter!

❄️ They typically hibernate from October through April, sometimes taking shelter in old stone foundations or cellars.

And despite their name, milk snakes don't actually drink milk! The name likely comes from an old myth that they would sneak into barns and drink milk from cows. 🐄

Thanks, Ben, for making sure our unexpected guest made it safely back outside! Sometimes you just never know what (or who!) is going to wander through the office. 😂

Think you know what’s growing beneath the trees?

Step off the trail and into the fascinating world of fungi with mycologist Jonathan Kranz.

On this guided woodland walk, you’ll learn how to look closely at the mushrooms you encounter, understand what makes one species different from another, and explore both the edible and potentially toxic fungi found in our region.

But mushroom foraging is about more than what ends up in a basket. You’ll also discover the important role fungi play in healthy forests and the ecosystems around us.

Whether you’re curious about mushrooms, interested in learning to identify them, or simply want to see Beaver Brook’s woods from a different perspective, this walk will give you a whole new appreciation for the forest floor.
