Washington D. C. United States Senate - Summer of 1988
Letter of Recommendation Letter for Kelly Dunn.

One day a car pulled up to my house and two men dressed in black business suits knocked on my door. The real men in black.
They asked me if would like to an be an intern for Senator, Donald Riegle. They said, as an intern, there would be no pay but everything would be paid.
I asked how did you know I was here.
They just gave me that blank, no nonsense stare.

The internship opened the doors to many other companies, government agencies and departments.

For many years I didn't mention my work as it would be too much to explain.
I knew my school friends from Lamphere would never believe me!
As I am well into my golden years I've been reflecting on the timeline of my life. Looking back it seems I was living five, simultaneous lives.

I remember vividly the last day of my internship.
I was presented with a United States flag. They told me to give this to my Dad, Kelly Dunn, for his service and his medals of bravery in the Korean War.
They told me the flag was flown over the White House for thirty minutes in his honor.
When I arrived home I gave my Dad the flag and a letter from Senator Riegle.
My Dad asked how did they know.
I put on my Men in Black sunglasses and smiled.

If you have the opportunity to help mentor someone, do it.
You may never see their future successes but you will always be thanked for planting the seed.

A new episode of HAWAII Nature's Song
Episode: Alocasia Amazonica

Today we will be listening to the recorded audio from within the Alocasia Amazonica plant.
This series was created by the inquisitive mind of, Mister Kelly Dunn.

Kelly Dunn, long time resident of the island of Hawaii, has been busy the last few years with a new type of research.

Years ago Kelly began experimenting with a new, botanical recording technology.
Today, this technology allows us to hear the inner vibrations of the trees, plants and flowers.
These vibrations and electrical impulses are assigned multiple music notes that creates, in turn, a unique listening experience.

The results of these botanical recordings are very pleasing to the ear and relaxing to the mind.
Kelly Dunn has created hundreds of recordings of the trees, plants and flowers on the Island of Hawaii.
which led to the creation of this series.

At the beginning of each of his guided walking tours, Kelly gives a short demonstration
of this combination of Nature and technology.
After listening, Kelly believes that you will see, hear and experience Nature in a brand new way.
Kelly Dunn likes to point out that every tree, plant and flower each play a part in Nature's orchestra.

Alocasia Amazonica, also known as the Amazonian Elephant's Ear, is a tropical hybrid plant with dark bronze-green leaves and thick white or silvery-green veins.
It's native to Southeast Asia and has wavy edges and a arrowhead shape. The plant has been popular as a houseplant since the Victorian era, and is often displayed for its eye-catching foliage
The Alocasia Amazonica has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Reflecting on 30 years of being the first to create electronic forms for the Supreme Court.
I’ll explain briefly how new computing was to the legal publishers.
After I had signed my exclusive marketing contract with West Publishing (now Thompson Reuters) it was time to create the packaging.
The first runtime version of the Supreme Court Forms was on a thirty-two (32), 3 ½” floppy disks. The disks were not floppy but solid plastic squares. The original floppy disks were 5 ¼” and truly they would bend.
On a side note, a roll of Kodak film in a camera is the same film media to store data onto the floppy disks! One and the same!

Back to my story, I sent the first set of installation disks to the Lawyer’s Cooperative Publishing in Deerfield, Illinois.
The marketing department told me they would send a mock up of the packaging to me for my review.
Nearly a month later I received a package in the mail. I opened the box and there was the first version of the packaging.
The paper was shiny and colorful. I could see a partial collection of the Supreme Court Forms were listed on the backside.
The 3 ½” diskettes inside the box were numbered 1 through 32.
I looked at the front of the box and I laughed.
I called the marketing department and said it looks great but I’d like to change one thing.
They asked if there was a problem.
I said the photo of the floppy disk is face down.
I explained that the label is on the front side.
They didn’t understand. I said when a user inserts a floppy into the disk drive the label is always face up.
There was a long pause and they said they would call me back in a while.
An hour later my editor said that a change could not be made to the packaging as they had already printed 20,000 boxes.
He said there was no way they could make any changes.
He apologized again and hung up the phone.
I called a meeting with my programmers and showed them the front of the box.
They all began to laugh and said the disk on the box is face down.
I said for most of the publishers dealing with technology is a new thing for them.
As the boxes shipped, we received many phone calls asking why didn’t the disk go into the floppy drive as shown on the cover of the box. We explained that the top of the disk is on the other side, the front side.
Actually, the support calls led to other business opportunities.
We began to offer computers with the software preinstalled.
My vision had become a reality after many years of hard work.
The learning curve began and here we are thirty years later.

SUPREME COURT FORMS - 30TH ANNIVERSARY - THIEVERY!

With success sometimes there comes the urges to steal.
Twice in my thirty years it came to my attention that attorneys were purchasing my software and selling it to other attorneys.
Each time was exactly the same!
One day a paralegal called me and said she was fired. She thought I would be interested to know that her ex-boss was purchasing my software at full price, created copies and sold my program to other attorneys.
I was in disbelief as I have always respected the laws of our country.
She repeated her story and noted the attorney's contact information.
I called Mr. Attorney 1. I said, "I didn't know we were in business together."
He began cussing like a sailor and then I explained he was illegally selling my software.
After a short review the state bar revoked the license of Mr. Attorney 1 for one year.
It's my hope he was made to take a few educational courses during his suspension.
It wasn't long after I received another call, from a paralegal at another law firm. Same story with the same results.
I was left the idea that attorney's are human too.
There was a song that comes to mind, "Tempted by the fruit of another..."
Most attorney's I have met over my thirty plus years are outstanding professionals wishing to help others in legal need.
If you are ever tempted by the fruit of another just don't do!

Michigan Supreme Court Forms (SCAO) 30th Anniversary 1994 - 2024 - I would like to give special mention to Amy Byrd, Michigan SCAO Administrator. It was a huge day when our forms were given the, "SCAO Approved" permission. This was the first time in the United States that electronic legal forms were approved. This meant the clerks at the county offices had to time-stamp our forms. Amy Byrd always instructed me to contact her if any court gave us or the attorneys any problems accepting the forms. I am truly honored to have been part of the positive changes for the legal system. Soon thereafter I worked out a contract with West Publishing. SUPREME COURT FORMS by Kelly Dunn
30th Anniversary - 1994 to 2024

I would like to thank everyone that has worked on this project.
I was a law clerk for three years in Troy, Michigan.
During this time I saw so much paper wasted each week.
I clerked Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County.
I saw how the pre-printed, triplicate, carbonless forms were thrown at everyday because the hammer head on the typewriter would not always align correctly.
I left the pursuit of becoming an attorney and spent full time creating an electronic version of the Supreme Court Forms.
After three years the software was ready the forms were first accepted in Lansing, Michigan by the Michigan Supreme Court Administration (SCAO).
This was the first time electronic forms were used in the legal industry.
West Publishing and I agreed to a contract. West would have exclusive marketing rights and I would retain the source code.
It was the beginning of a wonderful thirty year journey.

Also, I envisioned and thought about the trees that were cut down every month only to end up in a land fill. It's my hope that we helped save some of the trees on Earth.

I thank my programmers, attorney's, paralegals, administrators at the Supreme Court and especially my Mom and Dad.
My Mom and Dad have always stood behind me even when others thought I was a bit out of my mind.

I knew I had made it when I was at a legal seminar. An old attorney walked up to me pointing his finger, he shouted, "You've basterdized our legal profession!" I laughed and thought, If I can get under the skin of an old attorney in the name of progress, I guess can live with that. Change is hard for many people but for me I love the challenge and the good it can bring to others.

If you are starting out in the world and have a vision just go with that first instinct. The amazing thing about America is we have the freedom fail. If you fail keep trying. It's the trying that counts and sometimes you will hit a homerun.
