A local effort between Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust and Open Space Institute (OSI) has permanently protected 990 acres — critical headwaters and habitat in one of Jackson County's largest remaining intact forested landscapes. Together, the organizations are protecting some of the area's most important landscapes with the goals of strengthening habitat connectivity, protecting water resources, expanding public access to nature, and ensuring that future generations can benefit from western North Carolina's spectacular scenic beauty and natural heritage. In the near future, this preserve, known as Trout Creek, will provide incredible outdoor recreation activities in a part of Jackson County that lacks such facilities.
