We found 20 edible and medicinal plants across 2 acres of land on Sassafras Gap Farm 🤯, one of Highlands - Cashiers Land Trust properties on the ancestral territories of the Cherokee people. Thank you Hope for helping us better understand our plant neighbors and build a reciprocal relationship with the rich and diverse life that makes up Western North Carolina. We munched on some wood sorel and sassafras leaves. Learned about the medicinal properties of yarrow, black walnut, garlic grass, strawberry leaves, tulip poplar and mountain mint. Thank you to the new community members who joined this foraging program. We love connecting with y’all outside.

I always leave our volunteer workdays feeling accomplished and proud of my community. In less than 3 hours, our team of eight volunteers built four benches and trimmed back 3 miles of trail in Dixon Woods in Highlands, NC. It is always fulfilling to bring something new into existence. Before this morning, there was no place to sit and enjoy a conversation, share a meal or observe the sunlight dance across the water. But after a few short hours, 4 benches emerged from a pile of wood, screws, and the collaboration of our dedicated HCLT community. I hope you get a chance to visit Dixon Woods and take a moment to rest on the benches near the pond, and after hearing this story, feel more connected to your community. Because, in our organization, there is a deeper story built into every property, bench and trail. Thank you for being a part of our story - through volunteering, exploring our trails or sharing our story with your friends.

HCLT staff and board members, Karen Patterson and Wally Evans, closed out the 2026 Southeast Land Conservation Conference last week in Greenville, SC. Seminar topics ranged from forest restoration practices and invasive species removal to expanding trail accessibility to roundtable discussions, sharing the triumphs and challenges experienced by land trusts from varying histories and sizes. It was impactful to hear that over nine million acres of land are under protection by land trusts in the USA from the 2020 census. This is a 43% increase since 2010. The conference concluded with Dr.Drew Lanham’s inspiring words marinating in our minds. He urges us to lean into our roles as the “translators and repositories of stories, families, legacies, secrets, empathy … witnessing strangers that will ultimately become partners in saving what they love.” Being entrusted with both our own home and someone else’s is a true privilege. Thank you for standing with us.
