The Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation was established on February 1, 2019 as a 501(C)3 public charity to improve the health and well-being of Highlands, Cashiers, and the surrounding communities. Together with generous donors, the Foundation aims to make positive and lasting change by supporting health-related projects and programs in the communities we serve.

In Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina's service area, more than 1 in 5 youth report unmet mental health needs, and rural schools have limited counselor coverage to meet them.

The response: embed trained mentors directly in schools, with trauma-informed and culturally responsive training for every volunteer, plus ongoing coaching from BBBSWNC staff. High school Bigs also receive stipends, gas cards, and graduation cords so participating doesn't cost them money.

Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation funding supported that work in 2025–26 across Swain, Graham, and Cherokee Counties and the Qualla Boundary – just one of the ways your donations make a lasting impact across our region.

Turning the local needs of the Plateau into lasting impact by supporting programs that ease fundamental healthcare challenges.

So far this year, the Foundation has awarded over $1 million through grants to 31 organizations serving Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties. These investments support work aligned with the Foundation’s key priorities, including access to primary care, behavioral health, and the health and well-being of infants, children, and adolescents.

And behind every dollar of support, there's a deeply human story.

Please join us in recognizing Jane Jerry, Community Advisor for our Marketing, Communications, and Development Committee!

Jane brings a career's worth of leadership to this role – from founding director of children's museums in Rhode Island and Houston, to CEO of Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, to Executive Director of The Bascom here in Highlands. That depth of experience in communications, development, and community-building shapes the guidance she offers our Foundation today.

Beyond her advisory role, Jane remains deeply active in Highlands – serving on the boards of the Literacy and Learning Center and the Counseling Center, and supporting programs like "Imagine the Future" and the "Bee Kind" art competitions for local students.

We're grateful for Jane's continued commitment to strengthening our community.

Every dollar donated to the Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation shows up in our community in tangible ways – like a Licensed Trauma Counselor now supporting residents at Life Challenge of Western North Carolina.

Through its residential program, Life Challenge walks alongside women and their families as they work toward recovery from addiction and other life-controlling challenges, helping them rebuild toward healthier, more stable futures.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re reminded that caring for ourselves and our neighbors includes making support easier to access.

In a 2024 community health survey, nearly 1 in 4 Jackson County residents and 1 in 5 Macon County residents reported that they couldn’t get mental health services when they needed them.

At the Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation, we believe everyone in our community deserves the chance to get the care they need. Let’s keep talking, listening, and showing up for one another. 💚

Some experiences of domestic violence never appear in police records. In a 2024 U.S. survey, an estimated 35.5% of domestic-violence victimizations were not reported to police. That means the experiences we can count are not the whole story.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we stand with survivors in our community. No one should have to face abuse alone, and reaching out for support does not require making a police report.

If you or someone you know wants confidential support, REACH of Macon County lists a 24-hour crisis phone and text line at 828-369-5544. Pisgah Legal Services provides legal services to survivors in Macon and Jackson counties.

The 2027 Grant Cycle Opens February 8 – and now it's even easier to apply.

So far this year, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 million to 31 organizations serving Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties. Today, we're preparing for what comes next.

The 2027 cycle opens February 8 with a simplified one-step application. Eligible organizations will have 45 days to apply for funding that strengthens health and well-being across our region.

Behind every grant is a human story: a senior gaining access to medical care, a patient receiving essential healthcare closer to home.
