Yesterday, advocates gathered at the Nassau County Legislature to try to stop the legislators from passing an illegal, transphobic bill to prevent transgender women and girls from participating in sports. Unfortunately the bill passed but our fight continues! If it is signed into law we will see Nassau in court. Trans women are women. Tell the Nassau County Legislature to vote NO on the discriminatory and transphobic legislation that would bar trans women and girls from playing on girls’ and women’s sports teams at county-run facilities.

COURT STRIKES DOWN NASSAU COUNTY ANTI-TRANS SPORTS BAN --

On Friday, the Nassau County Supreme Court struck down County Executive Blakeman’s executive order banning transgender girls and women from participating in girls’ and women’s sports at county-run facilities.

“We are gratified the court has struck down a harmful policy that belongs in the dustbin of history,” said Gabriella Larios, staff attorney at the New York Civil Liberties Union. “The ruling deals a serious blow to County Executive Blakeman’s attempt to score cheap political points by peddling harmful stereotypes about transgender women and girls. We will continue to ensure that the attacks against LGBTQ+ rights that are sweeping the nation will not stand in New York.”

“Today’s decision is a victory for those who believe that transgender people have the right to participate in sports just like everyone else. It sends a strong message that transphobic discrimination cannot stand,” said Curly Fry (they/them), president of Long Island Roller Rebels. “As a league welcoming trans women and committed to providing a safe space for everyone to be their full selves, County Executive Blakeman’s order tried to punish us just because we believe in inclusion and stand against transphobia. Trans people belong everywhere including in sports, and they will not be erased.”

In March 2024, the NYCLU filed a lawsuit challenging the Nassau County ban on behalf of the Long Island Roller Rebels, a Nassau County recreational women’s flat track roller derby league. Under the executive order, the league, which welcomes trans women, was barred from using Nassau County’s facilities.

Due to the weather, we will now be hosting our NYS ERA Campaign Launch at the Ethical Humanist Society at 38 Old Country Road, Garden City. Please use the side door adjacent to the parking lot to enter the venue as the front door will not be open. We will be kicking off our rally promptly at 12:00 so please plan to arrive at 11:45! NYCLU members and staff from around the state mobilized on Wednesday, January 17 to lobby for Daniel’s Law in Albany. Daniel’s Law, named after Daniel Prude, will minimize police response to mental health crisis calls, and allow for social worker and peer responses, as is appropriate. This will help stop needless police violence and death, as experienced by Daniel Prude in Rochester in 2020. Mental Illness is not a criminal issue, it is a health issue. Pass Daniel’s Law now!
