The Special Education Task Force is holding a virtual training!

Participants will receive an update on new and updated special education laws, regulations, state and federal guidance, and trending topics or issues. The presenter will share updates about new or revised guidance from the US Department of Education, including the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Programs (OSERS), and New York State Department of Education (NYSED). The presentation will offer a summary update and brief analysis of relevant changes or updates and how they may impact access to or delivery of special education for the 2026-2027 school year in key areas such as identification, evaluation, eligibility, implementation, and procedural rights and protections related to special education programs and services for students with disabilities.

I’m speaking not just as a tenant, but as an advocate for housing change.

There’s a narrative about tenants on Section 8 that doesn’t reflect reality. The truth is, the system is strict, stressful, and often unforgiving. Inspections, paperwork, and delays—many outside of our control—can put our housing at risk at any time.

Section 8 doesn’t equal stability. It often means living under constant pressure, where even small issues can have serious consequences, and moving isn’t always an option.

Let me also be clear: the housing laws we’ve fought for are not for landlords who already do right by their tenants. They exist because too many landlords neglect their properties and the people living in them. Those laws are about protection, not punishment.

And for those who don’t know—when tenants on assistance start working and trying to do better, much of that income gets taken or recalculated in ways that make it hard to move forward. It can feel like being pushed to stay stuck instead of supported to grow.

Despite all of that, I became an entrepreneur. I opened my own doors and built a nonprofit that helps people in need. I turned my experience into purpose.

Most tenants are doing their best—paying their portion, following the rules, and trying to maintain stability in a system that isn’t always built for that.

This isn’t about blame. It’s about understanding. Because better understanding leads to better outcomes—for everyone.
