Our hearts are heavy following the tragic loss of Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Terpsma in the line of duty on October 30.

At the request of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association is collecting donations to help support his family during this difficult time. 100% of all donations collected for the Deputy Ryan Terpsma Memorial Fund will be provided directly to Deputy Terpsma's family to assist with funeral expenses and other expenses resulting from this tragic loss. MSPOA will not retain any portion of the contributions. As a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, MSPOA can accept contributions as charitable donations, eligible for tax deduction as permitted by law.

We stumbled on an MSPOA yearbook from 1956 and found a treasure trove of good old fashioned Sheriffs, Deputies, and Jailers!

Jail Commanders from big and small agencies across Montana are coming together this week to share ideas, discuss challenges, and learn from each other.

These meetings allow us to collaborate, share experiences, and work toward improving our detention facilities and the services we provide to our communities. There is always something to learn from one another, and we appreciate the opportunity to connect with others who understand the unique challenges of running a detention facility.

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to participate and contribute to these important conversations!

Get out and hunt with your kiddos! It's a great opportunity to share the love of the land and our collective responsibility to be good citizens when we hunt. If you have a picture of your child with their game animal we'd love to see it!

As we continue to highlight the divisions and vital roles within a Sheriffs Office, this week’s spotlight is on our law enforcement Chaplains.

We’re grateful for the law enforcement chaplains serving across Montana, and especially for our main Chaplain, Warren Hiebert.

Warren works tirelessly to train new chaplains, help establish chaplain programs in sheriffs’ offices, host the annual Chaplain Academy in conjunction with the MSPOA convention, and provide support to officers and agencies through critical incidents, tragedies, and losses.

Thank you, Warren and all Montana law enforcement chaplains, for serving those who serve.

Meet your new MSPOA President, Sheriff Steve Holton

1. How long have you been in law enforcement? 27 years

2. What made you choose a career in law enforcement? I wanted to pursue a career that mattered and gave me the opportunity to grow and learn every day, and provide a service to my community.

3. What is your favorite part of the job? Every day is different

4. What is one thing about law enforcement that you wish the public understood better? That this career is not all about enforcement. The men and women in law enforcement spend a lot of time helping people through issues that are not necessarily criminal or typical law enforcement functions.

5. How long have you served on the MSPOA Board? Six years

6. What made you want to become involved with MSPOA? I saw firsthand the commitment and dedication this association has toward preserving the Office of Sheriff, advocating for smart policy, administration and legislation, and taking care of our peace officers and detention officers.

7. What do you enjoy most about being involved with MSPOA? The opportunity to have a seat at the table and a voice when policy and legislation is discussed. Also, the opportunity to work closely with and learn from such a dedicated and experienced group of law enforcement experts in the State of Montana.

Your Sheriffs Office — SROs

Montana’s 56 Sheriffs’ Offices vary in size and resources, but they all share the common goal of keeping the peace and protecting the public.

One way many Sheriffs’ Offices make a difference is through School Resource Officer programs, building positive relationships between law enforcement and the next generation.

Thank you to all of our deputies who stepped up to take on the important role of SRO. It is the first step in building relationships within our community and showing children LEO's are friendly and approachable.
