Today, we honor the hard work and dedication of all those in law enforcement and detention who continue to serve - day and night, holidays included - working tirelessly to keep our state safe.

While many enjoy a well-deserved day of rest, our officers, deputies, detention staff, and first responders remain on duty, protecting and serving with commitment and integrity.

This Labor Day, lets take a moment to recognize their sacrifices and the countless others whose work strengthens our communities.

Stay safe, enjoy the holiday, and thank you to all who serve!

With all the smoke in the air and the high temps we'd like to highlight Project STAR.

Project STAR is an interagency cooperative agreement between the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) and the Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (MSPOA) that allows county Sheriffs to request and fund mutual-aid law enforcement support from other counties during major wildland fire evacuations and incidents.

We currently have a Project STAR deployment to assist Beaverhead County. Thank you to all the Montana Sheriffs who are always willing to help out each other's communities in times of need! Thank you to the law enforcement, firefighters, and support staff who are assisting with fires in Montana!

MSPOA is hosting Primary SWAT this week. This is not an easy course and it’s not supposed to be. It is physically demanding, mentally challenging, and somehow always seems to take place during the hottest days of summer. The students are held to a high standard because the instructors expect the best from themselves before they ever ask it of their students.

At the end of the week, 32 students will complete the course. But it would not be possible without the 13 experienced tactical officers from Sheriffs’ Offices and Police Departments from across Montana who are volunteering their time this week to train, mentor, and prepare the next generation of tactical operators and commanders.

That is one of the best traditions in law enforcement; experienced officers investing in those who will one day take their place.

To our instructors who are sharing their knowledge, teaching safety, correcting mistakes, and helping build the next generation, thank you! Your impact reaches far beyond this week’s course!

If you could give one piece of advice to someone just entering the profession and just pinning on the badge for the first time, what would it be? Maybe it is something your FTO told you; maybe it is something you learned the hard way; or maybe it is something that’s guided you through your entire career.

Whether you are still wearing the badge or you have been retired for years, share your advice in the comments! The next generation is listening!

☀️ Your vehicle can become deadly for your dog in just minutes. 🐾

With summer temperatures rising across Montana, the Montana Sheriff’s & Peace Officers Association wants to remind everyone: Please don’t leave your pet in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.

Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a vehicle can quickly climb to dangerous levels, putting your pet at risk of heatstroke, brain damage, and death.

Signs of heat distress include:
🐶 Excessive panting
💧 Heavy drooling
🚨 Weakness or stumbling
🤢 Vomiting
🩸 Bright red gums
⚠️ Collapse or unresponsiveness

If your pet can’t go inside with you, the safest place for them is at home.

If you see an animal in distress inside a parked vehicle, contact your local law enforcement agency immediately. A quick call could save a life.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this post. Together, we can prevent needless tragedies and keep Montana’s pets safe this summer.

This week we celebrate 250 years of American independence and the freedoms that make this country amazing.

We're grateful to the men and women of our Armed Forces, law enforcement, first responders, and all those who choose a life of service to protect our communities, our nation, our liberties, and our ideals. Your commitment and sacrifice help preserve the freedoms we sometimes take for granted.
