The landscape for nonprofits that receive federal grants has changed significantly in the last year and a half, and organizations like the Invasive Species Action Network say they're dealing with funding delays and other challenges. Now, the Montana Nonprofit Association has sent out a letter, asking the state's congressional delegation to work for clearer rules on grants.

August 17 is National Nonprofit Day—a day to recognize and celebrate the hard work of the nearly 10,000 nonprofits in Montana.

Three cheers for all the ways nonprofits support healthy Montana communities.

Nonprofits are supported by a variety of revenue streams. Some rely on individual donations. Some run small money-making businesses like thrift stores to fund their mission. Others receive grants from large private foundations. Many partner with local, state, and federal government to provide critical services to citizens.

For many nonprofits, revenue is like a house of cards holding up their projects.

Over the past eighteen months, organizations that rely on federal funding have faced months-long delays and abrupt changes to systems and requirements with little explanation. They have built programs, leased buildings, and hired staff - not on a dream but on real contracts, grant awards, and promises from the federal government. Without that funding -- or when invoices are paid months after services are delivered, the whole organization can be in jeopardy.

Today, along with 80 nonprofits, we sent a letter to the Montana Congressional Delegation, asking them to protect the stability and timeliness of federal funding for communities across Montana.

It's your money. It should serve you.
Delayed federal funding = delayed services for Montanans.

Over the past 18 months MNA has heard story after story from our members about disruptions to federal grants and contracts. We've heard about NOFOs issued months after they were expected, tight grant turnaround timelines, promised money stuck in limbo, reimbursements that arrive months after documentation has been submitted, and grants pulled back after contracts have been signed and money has been spent.

Nonprofits, like all businesses, need to be able to trust contracts and funding processes to be effective, especially when many have already hired staff, signed leases, and built programs around them.

More than 70 organizations have signed a letter to Montana's congressional delegation, asking them to ensure that the government honors its contracts so that we can continue serving Montana communities.

Nonprofits are important partners who help the government carry out its work and deliver services and programs to Montanans. For this partnership to work, we need to be able to trust contracts and the funding process. A 7-month delay is unacceptable.
