According to Equal Justice Works, 61% of Americans believe income affects whether someone receives fair treatment in court, and many mistakenly assume an attorney will be provided in civil cases. A lack of information and the intimidation of the legal system create powerful barriers to seeking help, leaving millions to face serious legal challenges alone and unsure of their rights or where to turn.
Our mission at Montana Justice Foundation is to bridge the justice gap by funding local nonprofits that provide critical civil legal services across our great state.
On this Law Day, your gift helps expand access to legal help and moves us closer to a system that works for everyone. Even a small donation makes a lasting difference: https://www.mtjustice.org/donate

For the first time ever, MLSA is so excited to take part in Valley Gives with Billings Community Foundation this year! Did you know that MLSA handles 800+ cases in Yellowstone County annually? In 2025, those cases impacted 2,034 clients and their family members, including 940 children.

We are excited to deepen our relationships in Billings and deepen the support that we receive from the Billings community. Mark your calendars for April 30-May 1, and please consider including MLSA in your YVG giving this year! Did you know, unlike criminal cases, people are not guaranteed a lawyer for civil cases, and civil legal assistance in Montana remains limited even for those who can afford to pay. Meanwhile, 90% of low-income Montanans do not receive any legal help for civil cases. This means going to court alone and facing property management companies, abusers, and out-of-state debt collectors who have lawyers on their side. Access to justice should not be a luxury.
