The Kentucky Department for Public Health announced that two infants have died from pertussis (also known as whooping cough) in the commonwealth within the last six months. These are the first pertussis-related deaths in Kentucky since 2018. Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory illness that can be serious for people of all ages, but is most dangerous for infants. Some people with pertussis have mild symptoms and do not know they have it, however, they can still spread the bacteria to others. Many babies who contract pertussis are infected by older siblings, parents or caregivers who may not know they are infected. Health officials encourage everyone to remain up to date with recommended immunizations including the immunization for pertussis, which is combined with the tetanus and diphtheria vaccines (DTaP and Tdap). People who should be vaccinated include:
β€’ All pregnant women with every pregnancy to protect their babies.
β€’ Infants when they are two months, four months, six months, and 12-15 months old.
β€’ Children before starting kindergarten.
β€’ Teens when 11-12 years old.
β€’ Teens and adults should be immunized at least every 10 years or sooner if an injury occurs, or to protect a newborn.

In response to both the uncertainty of federal funding, as well as the catastrophic flooding throughout the state, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our scheduled Kentucky Rural Health Association Regional Symposium in Paducah on May 9, 2025. As we learn more about funding and our state recovers from the flooding, we will re-evaluate our plan to host this symposium.

Our commitment to Kentucky's primary care providers who wish to provide screening and treatment for hepatitis C has led us to make the decision to offer our Kentucky Hepatitis Academic Mentoring Program (KHAMP) training in a virtual format on May 9, 2025. To register for this event, please click:

Disaster Unemployment Assistance Available for Those Impacted by Severe Storms and Floods

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 28, 2025) – Gov. Andy Beshear announced that the state will accept applications for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) from individuals in 11 counties who are out of work as a result of the severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, landslides and mudslides that occurred in Kentucky beginning on Feb. 14, 2025.

Those in the following areas are eligible: Breathitt, Clay, Floyd, Harlan, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Martin, Owsley, Perry and Pike counties.

Individuals – including unemployed and self-employed individuals who were living or working in the affected areas and became unemployed or had work interrupted as a direct result of severe storms and flooding that began on Feb. 14, 2025 – are eligible to apply for DUA benefits through the Kentucky Office of Unemployment Insurance.

How To File a Claim
Affected individuals should visit the Kentucky Career Center website at https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fkcc.ky.gov%2FPages%2Findex.aspx/1/010001954eb1e1b5-0fa5619c-b620-4d21-b130-243fa2011086-000000/4cQB12Yn4yJQDo3nlkjfdBl-Uj3u-zNO6VmmVvPxjB0=394 or call 502-875-0442 to file their initial claim. The deadline to apply for assistance is April 25, 2025.

Kentucky Career Center offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, in observance of Labor Day. Unemployment insurance claimants may experience a delay in payments due to banks being closed.
