Abigail has big plans to major in civil engineering with a minor in business at the University of Kentucky, and thanks to EKCEP’s Prosper Appalachia initiative, she’s already building the leadership skills to get there.

Prosper Appalachia connected Abigail with a paid work experience right at the Martin County Public Library. Instead of just stacking books, Abigail spearheaded major community programs, including “Teddy Tales” (a youth literacy initiative she expanded into local kindergarten classrooms) and a tech coding camp for local kids!

The experience gave her hands-on practice with organization, front-desk operations, and professional responsibility.

“They helped me find a place that I could work in in my county that could give me as many opportunities as I would need and experience,” Abigail shared. “Working with the people, it made it very easy to find these jobs and get the experience instead of having to go searching myself.”

When Emma started her senior year, she wasn’t entirely sure if nursing was the right path for her. Thanks to EKCEP’s Prosper Appalachia initiative, she didn’t have to wait until college to find out.

Through a local partnership with Harlan County Community Action, Emma connected with Career Development Specialist Rhett Alred, who helped land her a paid internship at Harlan Health and Rehab.

By shadowing Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and learning the ropes in a real healthcare setting, Emma gained a massive head start and total clarity about her future.

“Prosper Appalachia has definitely helped me know what I want to do and know what I’m going into,” Emma shared. “Some people just go into what they want to do completely blind and they don’t even end up liking it, but I do like it a lot!”

The story gets even better: Emma recently earned her CNA certification! She plans to continue working at Harlan Health and Rehab this summer while attending Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College to pursue her nursing license.

Beyond clinical experience, Emma learned valuable workplace habits like time management, teamwork, and the power of a good attitude. Best of all, the program showed her that she can build a rewarding healthcare career right at home in Harlan County.

For Spencer Jude, one of the most valuable parts of his Prosper Appalachia experience was receiving his very first paycheck. It wasn’t just about earning money; it was about gaining independence, responsibility, and investing in his future.

“I am not a person that really comes from a lot, so every dollar that I made I tried my best to spend it on something I could use later on down the road,” Spencer shared.

Through Prosper Appalachia, students gain more than work experience, they learn the value of hard work, financial responsibility, and the confidence that comes from earning their own success.

Watch Spencer’s story and hear how Prosper Appalachia helped him take an important step toward his future.

When Riley Miller first heard about Prosper Appalachia as a junior, he knew it was an opportunity he didn’t want to miss. As a senior at Harlan County High School, Riley turned his lifelong passion for agriculture into real-world experience through a paid internship at Meade Tractor in Harlan.

Through Prosper Appalachia, Riley gained hands-on experience working with tractors and agricultural equipment while learning valuable workplace skills like tracking hours, completing timesheets, and working in a professional environment.

“I wanted to work at Meade Tractor because I love agriculture stuff,” Riley said. “It’s just a very good program, and I would recommend it to anybody that’s wanting to do it.”

Now, after graduation, Riley is continuing to build toward his future as he prepares for college and explores a career in engineering.
