Our affiliate spotlight for today is the wonderful Floyd County Community Foundation (FCCF)! FCCF has been hard at work since their inception in 2018 to support efforts that build long-term capacity towards improving the quality of life in Floyd County and address the immediate needs of their community.

Over the past 8 years, FCCF has granted more than $730,000 to support positive work happening in Floyd County. While much has happened over those years to promote growth in their county, there have been some notable grants that we feel are important to highlight:
• In 2022, following a mass shooting in Allen, Kentucky, FCCF created the Allen Crisis Fund. They raised and distributed $315,000 for those impacted.
• In 2022 and 2025, FCCF responded to disastrous floods, assisting with recovery.
• FCCF hosts 2 scholarship funds, the Bertee & Rhetta Faye Adkins Scholarship and the Bonita Compton Scholarship Fund, both of which provide scholarships annually.
• Recently, FCCF has had a focus on food security efforts.
• FCCF is looking forward to a Floyd County Board of Education partnership promoting a Floyd County teacher retention program!

FCCF is run by a board of local leaders from Floyd County, including: Ellen Harris, Evan Smith, Misha Curnutte, Jim Stewart, Kathy Stumbo, Missy Allen, Rhonda Clark, Surekha Maddiwar, Heather Ousley, Billie Turner, Charly Grace, and Joe Campbell.

On Monday, June 1st, our Sycamore Fund Project Coordinator, Mandi Fugate Sheffel, and Chief Community Officer, Kathy King Allen, attended the grand opening of The Hub of Floyd County!

The Hub of Floyd County is the 8th Hub location to open in Appalachian Kentucky. Each Hub is a one-stop resource center for people in addiction or recovery. They host recovery group meetings, peer support, arts and crafts classes, community gatherings, expungement clinics, parenting classes, and free dental clinics. They work to relieve barriers by providing emergency food and clothing, hygiene products, showers, employment readiness, and more.

Get to know Katie! Katie Bowling is our Financial Accountant, and she is known around the office for her love of mowing, being the office papaw, and delivering birthday cakes for staff on behalf of her wife.

We asked Katie a few questions to help you learn more about her!

1. What are your hobbies?
I love spending time outdoors — gardening with my wife, Nikki, landscaping, mowing, tinkering with projects, and just piddling on the farm. If I can be outside working with my hands, I’m happy.

2. What is something many people don’t know about you/a fun fact?
I’m the fifth generation to live on my family farm in Laurel County, Kentucky, and I wouldn’t trade that heritage or way of life for anything.

3. What genre of music is your favorite?
Country music, especially old country, will always be my favorite. I grew up loving artists like Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, and Dolly Parton. I also enjoy newer artists like Ashley McBryde and Cody Johnson.

Six members of our team had a blast at the GivingTuesday Community Campaign Accelerator Cohort Convening in Nashville earlier this week! Brenna, Kathy, Amy, Tammy, Jenna, and Lacie attended the three-day convening, which was held at the National Museum of African American Music.

In Nashville, they were able to hear from experienced leaders of other community campaigns, learn and gain ideas from fellow community foundations, and have fun getting to know the other members of the accelerator cohort better! Our staff also had a great time exploring the museum and its interactive exhibits.

Thank you to GivingTuesday for hosting our team!

Today, we want to shine a spotlight on one of our amazing affiliates, the Clinton County Community Foundation (CCCF)! CCCF was established in 2014, and they work to meet needs in Clinton County. Their focus is on encouraging community engagement and supporting leadership, supporting programs focused on physical and mental health, supporting local nonprofit organizations and groups with common goals, and supporting arts and culture preservation efforts.

The Clinton County Community Foundation has been hard at work over the past few months! A few of their recent accomplishments include:
• Working with the Clinton County Family Resource and Youth Services Center to provide clothing items and identify families that could benefit from the use of the indoor pool at the Twin Lakes Family Wellness Center.
• Granting $10,000 to Clinton County High School to help fund their Hudl sports technology software, which will give student athletes in Clinton County a vehicle for taking recruitment possibilities for post secondary education into their own hands.
• Supporting the Clinton County Schools Drama Department, which builds skills in and out of the theatre for Clinton County youth and provides entertainment for the Clinton County community.
• Being a major sponsor for the annual Clinton County Christmas in the Foothills community event.

CCCF is run by a board of local leaders from Clinton County, including: Jessica Sullivan, Willard Johnson, Juli Denney, Sarah Browning, Al Cross, David Cross, Keith McWhorter, Carol Peddicord, Glen Ray Smith, Mike Smith, and Rick Smith.

Get to know Jenna! Jenna Rose is one of our Communications Officers, and she is known around the office for her witty sense of humor, her innovative ideas, and her repertoire of quotes from shows and movies from her childhood. Jenna has been in her role at the Foundation since 2023.

We asked Jenna a few questions to help you learn more about her!

1. What are your hobbies?
I enjoy reading, crafting, doing puzzles, journaling, and spending time with my puppies and nieces and nephew. I’ve recently become a plant lady, and I’m also trying my hand at a small garden (wish me luck).

2. Do you have pets? What are their names?
I have 2 sweet golden doodles! One is named Willow Bea and the other is named Piper Lou. Their nicknames have now evolved to Wee Woo and Pipe Woo.

3. Do you enjoy reading? What are you reading right now/what is a fav book?
I very much enjoy reading! I’m currently waiting (not very patiently) for the final book in the Inheritance Games series to be released in July. I also believe that certain books are to be read during certain seasons. I would try to explain the science behind that, but it’s strictly based on vibes alone. Buying books is a separate hobby, and I will purchase books and then read them nearly a year later because it wasn’t a “summer book” it was, in fact, a “winter book” according to vibes.

We were absolutely blown away by the generosity we saw yesterday on KY Gives Day! We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who shared, donated, advocated, and celebrated with us.

This was a record-breaking KY Gives Day for us for the second year in a row! We were in the top 5% in the state. Donations don’t officially close until midnight tonight, but preliminary numbers show that you helped us raise $22,820 for 21 affiliates, organizations, and funds hosted at the Foundation.

With your help, we met our goal to raise $8,000 for our general fund! Our general fund fuels and sustains the infrastructure that brings resources, capacity, and community development to our region. We are so grateful to everyone who contributed to help us reach our goal!

If you missed out on donating yesterday, you still have a chance to contribute — you have until midnight to make your final donations. To make a last-minute donation, visit: https://www.kygives.org/organizations/foundation-for-appalachian-kentucky.

We're nearing the end of this road trip! There's only one hour left to give on KY Gives Day, and we want to end the day strong!

To recap, today we dove into all 5 of our strategic pathways:
1. Grow Local Economies, Businesses, and Entrepreneurs
2. Support Kids and Youth
3. Promote Hope and Opportunity
4. Strengthen Local Nonprofits & Community Leadership
5. Build Resilient Communities

All of these pathways help guide our work in Appalachian Kentucky. With these in mind, we are on the road to a thriving region.

It's not too late to give to support our work! You can visit https://www.appalachianky.org/kygivesday/ to learn more and make a donation.
