In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our historic YWCA building is lit in purple. Over the past year, more than 2500 people in our community turned to the YWCA for violence intervention services. We know there are many more incidents of violence that are unreported.

We are here to help. If you or someone you know would like to speak to one of our crisis advocates, please call us at 717.462.2887 (this is an alternate number as the main YWCA phone lines are currently down). We also have support groups available.

Domestic violence is a community safety issue—and its impact reaches far beyond what we see in the headlines.

Recent events in our community are a heartbreaking reminder that domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of profession, income, education or background.

The YWCA Greater Harrisburg’s State of Violence in Dauphin and Perry Counties report, released today in conjunction with the Week Without Violence, documents the scope of violence in our region. But the numbers only tell part of the story. Many survivors never come forward because of fear, threats, financial dependence or uncertainty about where to turn.

“We cannot mistake the numbers we have for the full extent of the problem,” said Mary Quinn, President and CEO of YWCA Greater Harrisburg. “A safer community requires more than awareness. It requires action, accountability, and sustained investment in the services that make safety possible.”

Survivors need trained professionals ready to respond, safe places to turn, and resources to help them rebuild their lives. These services are essential to the safety and well-being of our entire community.

We encourage community members, leaders and funders to read the report, understand the realities of violence in our region, and join us in strengthening the resources survivors need.

Today marks the beginning of the Week Without Violence, a time when we join with YWCAs across the country and around the world to raise awareness of violence against women, girls and people of color. This year's theme is "Rising Together: Centering Young Voices to End Gender-Based Violence."

Young people are disproportionately impacted by intimate partner violence, sexual assault, grooming, and exploitation, yet their voices are too often left out of conversations about prevention, healing and change.

Join us this week as we come together to listen, learn, advocate, and imagine a future free from violence. Watch this space for more information on what the YWCA Greater Harrisburg is doing to help spotlight violence in our communities.

And if you have been impacted by violence, know that help is available. Call us at 1.800.654.1211 to speak to one of our crisis advocates, or join us for our Seeking Safety Trauma and Recovery Groups. For more information on our groups, please call the hotline number above.
