REMINDER: Volunteer with us for National Trails Day, this Saturday, June 2 from 10am-2pm! The bridge materials have been delivered to the trailhead and now we need YOU to help us carry them in to our newest property, Black Bear Glen. But if carrying in a log doesn't appeal to you, don't worry! We have plenty of tasks to complete along the General's Trail that can match your ability and interest. All tools and gloves will be provided, but please bring your own water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray!

The hike will be around 2 miles of total trail with elevation gain around 150 feet. The trail is wet and muddy in spots so wear appropriate footwear. We will be hiking along the Appalachian Trail to the intersection with the Harris Trail and following that to General's Trail, which loops back to the AT. This section of the AT includes a larger stream crossing on Mink Brook, which is a wood plank crossing with a rustic handrail. We will be under the cover of mixed hardwood and hemlock forests for the day. Please email the Stewardship Coordinator at [email protected] with any additional questions about trail or work conditions. Pre-register for this event so we know how many people to expect: https://www.hanoverconservancy.org/event/volunteer-for-national-trails-day/

We're busily preparing for National Trails Day on June 6! In two Saturdays, we'll be taking volunteers out to our newest property that we acquired last November, Black Bear Glen. This property on Moose Mountain has existing trails that are in need of a little TLC! Our goal for the volunteer day is to replace this bridge, but we have plenty of tasks on our to-do list for all abilities and ages. Let us know you plan to attend by registering on our website here: https://www.hanoverconservancy.org/event/volunteer-for-national-trails-day/

Huge thank you to the volunteer group from the Dartmouth Sigma Nu fraternity who helped us remove a patch of invasive knotweed from our Mink Brook Nature Preserve this weekend! We appreciate you taking the time to give back to the community and help us support the biodiversity of one of our most-loved properties. And speaking of biodiversity, in the process of tackling the knotweed patch, we uncovered a group of wood turtles looking to nest in the sandy banks along Mink Brook! We've bagged up the knotweed and will be letting it dry out before disposing of it, since green stalks as small as your pinky can root and become new plants if in contact with soil. Controlling knotweed is a process, but it's better with a team!

The Mink Brook Nature Preserve is getting lots of foot traffic, and it's not just from humans and their dogs! A local wildlife tracker snapped this photo last week in the wet mud, near where Trout Brook meets Mink Brook. This popular thoroughfare is being used by river otter (the collection of prints at the top of the photo) and raccoon (the two very human-looking prints at the bottom of the photo), as well as deer and beaver (prints not pictured). River corridors provide essential highways for many animals, and we are proud to maintain this section of Mink Brook for animal and human use alike. Let us know if you spot any other prints when you're out on the trails!

Our events calendar is in full swing for Spring!

Join us this weekend as we properly kick off the season with Kite Day at Balch Hill! Bring your friends, families, and kites (don't worry, we'll have plenty of kites and friends to share) for an afternoon of fun on the Balch meadow.

Next weekend we'll return to Mink Brook Nature Preserve for a Mothers Day wildflower walk, with more great events scattered throughout the next few weeks. Check out hanoverconservancy.org/events for our full listing of what's coming up next.

The City Nature Challenge is days away! From cities and towns to forests and backyards, we’re joining communities worldwide to document the incredible biodiversity around us using the free iNaturalist app. The worldwide bio-blitz will run from April 24-27 with the goal of recording as many observations to iNaturalist as we can. You don't need to be a scientist and you don't even need to know the name of the plant, animal, or insect you observe. Once you add a picture and location to the app, experts from around the world will help identify what you saw.

As part of the City Nature Challenge, the Hanover Conservancy will lead guided nature walks this Saturday, April 25, in partnership with Hanover Parks and Recreation and the Connecticut River Conservancy. Join Gail McPeek and Tom Sherry for a bird walk from 7-9am, and stick around for a botany walk led by Alice Schori and Lynnwood Andrews from 10am-noon. Throughout the event, we will be providing assistance for how to record observations on iNaturalist. All walks will depart from the Brook Road trailhead of Mink Brook Nature Preserve.
