The Hanover Conservancy is dedicated to the protection of land and water in Hanover, New Hampshire.

The Hanover Conservancy is the oldest local land trust in New Hampshire. Our mission is to promote the appreciation and conservation of land, water, and natural habitats in Hanover. We achieve our mission with programs in land conservation, active stewardship, environmental education and support for conservation oriented public policies.

Local fisherman Thomas Ames Jr., author of Hatch Guide to New England Streams, will lead a guided walk on essential insects in New England freshwater on Saturday, September 12, from 2-4pm. Thomas spends a significant amount of his time fishing on the Ottauquechee and White Rivers, and is a seasoned angler on a long list of local streams. He serves as Education Chair for the Upper Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Our Reading Nature book club in partnership with the Howe Library continues this fall with the theme: Books for a Changing Climate, four (comparatively optimistic) books about how to feel and act during this time of unprecedented climate change. We will meet on the second Thursdays of the month from 6-7pm at the Aldrich Room in the Howe Library, with a Zoom option available as well. **No library card is needed to borrow a book club book, and you don't even need to be a Hanover resident! We will be discussing our first book, What If We Get It Right? by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, on Thursday, September 10, 6-7pm. Find more information at thehowe.org/events

Help us reroute a wet section of hiking trail adjacent to the AT corridor in Hanover this Friday, August 14 starting at 9am! We will be rerouting about 500 feet of the General’s Trail on our Black Bear Glen property at Moose Mountain. Tasks include cutting branches and small trees, digging out the trail tread, and brushing in the old trail route. For more information, email [email protected]

Hanover has many special trails, and we encourage you to explore them this summer! There are fifteen trails with destination markers throughout the town, and if you hike at least six of them, you can enter a raffle to win prizes from local businesses! Can you complete the challenge?

These family-friendly hikes are a great introduction to Hanover’s natural landscape for people of most ability levels. Registration is free, and all maps are available online at https://www.hanoverconservancy.org/hanover-trails-challenge/. You will also find the Hanover Trails Challenge checklist at that link. Email completed checklists to [email protected] for a chance to win raffle prizes from local businesses like King Arthur Baking Company, Still North Books, and the Nugget Theater. Join the Hanover Conservancy for a gentle paddle down the Connecticut River, from Hewes Brook in Lyme to Mink Brook in Hanover! This 9-mile voyage will take us down an easy-going section of the Connecticut, along Hanover's western border. We'll pass many familiar brooks and streams that have benefited from conservation work higher in their watersheds as they meet the river. Attendees will be responsible for bringing their own canoes/kayaks and related safety equipment. Hanover Conservancy staff will help coordinate shuttle service between our put-in spot at Hewes Brook, and our take-out at the Mink Brook Nature Preserve.

To maintain a manageable group size, attendance will be capped at 12 canoes/kayaks. Please pre-register in advance to ensure we have a successful outing! EVENT REMINDER
Summer Wildlife Tracking at Mink Brook Nature Preserve, Sunday July 26 from 9am-1pm!

Audrey Dowell, joined by Fox Paw School's Jonathan Shapiro, will lead our group in looking for signs of wildlife on this well-trafficked preserve and if we're lucky, we'll get to see signs of its namesake like this photo captured by our trail camera on this property!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!

When: Saturday, July 25, from 9am-1pm

Where: Greensboro Ridge Natural Area, Velvet Rocks Drive, Hanover.

What: Help cut tree saplings from our designated habitat clearings and put them in piles for wildlife habitat.

Bring: Water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and anything else you need to be comfortable outside. All tools and work gloves will be provided.

We will be using hand tools to cut tree saplings from our designated habitat clearings. The work is mostly in brushy, fern-covered forest openings with uneven footing. The main location where we'll be working is 250 feet from the trailhead, and if we have time, we will move to a second forest opening about 1,000 feet uphill from the trailhead. Youth are welcome, accompanied by an adult. The weather looks to be sunny and clear with temperatures in the mid-70s to 80s. Join us at the Howe Library tonight at 6:30 PM for a presentation from wild edible plant enthusiast Russ Cohen. Russ will share wit and wisdom from more than five decades of foraging experience, as well as his work establishing a native plant nursery.

In-person attendees might also be able to sample some of Russ's delicious homemade creations!
