MEET THE ARTIST: Zach Sheets

Zach grew up in Norwich, VT and we are thrilled to have him on our roster this season.

BIO:

Zach Sheets (b. 1991) enjoys a multi-faceted career as a chamber musician, orchestral flutist, composer/performer, and advocate for funding in the arts and music education.

Zach has appeared as guest Principal Flute with the Boston Ballet and Spoleto Festival USA; the Portland, Albany and Cape Symphonies; and the Phoenix, Unitas, and Cape Cod Chamber Orchestras; and as a guest of the Boston Pops, Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and New World Symphony. At age 23, Zach was named Principal Flute, Lorusso Chair, of the Cape Symphony Orchestra, and held that role for 9 seasons. Solo and chamber appearances have been presented by the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, First Mondays at Jordan Hall, the Spoleto Festival’s “Music in Time”, and the Boston Symphony's "Music for the Senses" series.

He is a founding member of the [Switch~ Ensemble] and flute & piano Duo Axis, with whom he has premiered over 50 new works and been a musician in residence at Harvard, Cornell, Brown, University of Chicago, Ithaca, Cal Berkeley, UC San Diego, and many more.

Festival engagements include performances at the Spoleto (USA), Aldeburgh (UK), Cabrillo (USA), Royaumont (FR), Britten-Pears (UK), TIME:SPANS (USA), ManiFeste@IRCAM (FR), Klangspuren (AUT), SinusTON (GER), CulturaUNAM (MEX), and June in Buffalo (USA) Festivals.

Zach lives in Boston and works as a freelance musician. By day, he is the Chief Advancement Officer at Community Music Center of Boston. There, he leads a team of ten, overseeing a $20 million capital campaign for music in the public schools. A persuasive advocate for youth-led artistic projects, arts-sector workforce development, and the importance of equitable, community-based arts education, he has spoken before the Massachusetts Legislature, Mass Cultural Council, National Guild for Community Arts Education, Chamber Music America, and many more. MEET THE ARTIST: Sérgio Coelho

This season Sérgio has had multiple appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and became Principal Clarinet of Long Beach Symphony.

BIO:
Sérgio Coelho is a versatile international performer and educator with an expansive portfolio of solo, chamber music, and orchestral performances across America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. He is currently serving as the principal clarinet of the Long Beach Symphony and Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra.

Based in Los Angeles, California, Sérgio counts several collaborations with renowned orchestras around the world such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Cleavelend Symphony, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (New Zealand), among others.

Sérgio often collaborates with several festivals, chamber music and concert series. Some of the most notable include regular appearances with Mainly Mozart, Ojai Music Festival, Sunset ChamberFest, Hear Now, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, South Bay Chamber Music Society and Chamber Music Palisades to name a few. As a soloist, Sérgio has been showcased in several outstanding concerts, including performances of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the USC Symphony Orchestra and on tour with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra and the Metropolitan Academic Orchestra through several Portuguese cities, and a redemption of the John Corigliano Clarinet Concerto with the American Youth Symphony.

Lead by his passion for motion pictures Sérgio can be heard in several movies, tv shows and documentaries such as Only in Theaters and Chef’s Table. He also counts collaborations in multiple CD recordings, highlighting his clarinet artistry in projects like Raíces by Cacique Torcido & Juan Luqui and Therapy by Brendan Eder Ensemble.

In the sphere of competitions, Sérgio has had the privilege of participating and achieving recognition. From winning the American Youth Symphony and University of Southern California Concerto Competition to being a semifinalist in the Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition (Japan) and a 3rd Prize in the 8th Saverio Mercadante International Clarinet Competition (Italy).

Beyond the concert hall, Sérgio is a devoted educator. His passion for pedagogy has found expression in collaborations with various music schools, colleges, and non-profit organizations like the Los Angeles Philharmonic – Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, Young Musicians Foundation, the Colburn School of Music and as a woodwinds department chair at the School of Arts of Littoral Alentejo in Portugal.

As Sérgio continues to enrich the cultural tapestry with his art, he also dedicates his talents to community outreach, performing in homeless shelters, nursing homes, hospitals and participating in fundraiser concerts. Sérgio believes in the transformative power of music beyond the stage.

Sérgio earned a bachelor's degree in clarinet and orchestra performance from the National Academy of Advanced Orchestra Studies in Lisbon studying with Mr. Nuno Silva. He went on to achieve an impressive trifecta: a Graduate Certificate, a Master of Music Degree, and an esteemed Artist Diploma in clarinet performance at the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music under the tutelage of Mr. Yehuda Gilad.

In the story of Sérgio Coelho, each note played is a chapter of passion, dedication, and a harmonious journey through the universal language of music. His melodies transcend borders, leaving an indelible mark on the world of classical music.
