Congratulations Chief Matson.

The Division of Forests and Lands is pleased to announce that Captain Michael Matson has been promoted to Chief of the Forest Protection Bureau. Mike’s first day as Chief will begin Friday, June 26. He takes over the reins from Steve Sherman who retired at the end of May after a thirty-year career with DNCR, the last ten as Chief. Mike joined the Forest Protection Bureau in 2018 serving as a Region II Captain for the past five years. Prior to joining our team, he served as a Fish and Game Conservation Officer for fifteen years and before that, eight years in the US Army attaining the rank of Sargeant. Originally from Jefferson, NH, Mike resides in southeastern NH with his wife Jess and two sons Ryan and Jack, both of whom are attending the University of New Hampshire.

In his letter of interest, Mike stated, “My goal in this role is to ensure the priorities of the Forest Protection Bureau are communicated and understood by all its members. Like my predecessors, I plan to leave the Forest Protection Bureau a better place than when I started. I shall lead our staff with professionalism and will work hard to earn the respect this title deserves.”

Please join me in welcoming Mike to our leadership team at the Division of Forests and Lands!
