She laid the groundwork for numerous women, and her legacy endures. A remarkable individual, she advocated for the complete involvement of women in various fields. Alice Schafer (June 18, 1915 - September 27, 2009) was an American mathematician who was one of the founding members of the Association for Women in Mathematics. As a mathematics educator, she championed the full participation of women in mathematics. She was a strong role model for many women and worked to establish support groups for women in mathematics, to eliminate barriers women face in their study of mathematics and participation in the mathematics community, and to provide opportunity and encouragement for women in mathematics.🧮

Schafer was one of the founding members of the Association for Women in Mathematics in 1971 and she was elected as the second President serving from 1973-75. In 1990 the Association for Women in Mathematics established the Alice T Schafer Mathematics Prize in her honour.

Mark your calendars for a sweet Pearl River County tradition! The annual Blueberry Jubilee is returning to downtown Poplarville, Mississippi, on Saturday, June 13th.
If you love small-town charm, live music, and everything blueberry, this is the perfect summer day out for the whole family. The festival fills the streets with local heritage, community pride, and plenty of arts and crafts booths to explore.

What to Expect at the Jubilee:

🫐 All the Blueberry Treats You Can Imagine:

You can't have a Blueberry Jubilee without the star of the show. Poplarville earns its name as the "Blueberry Capital of Mississippi" with rows of food booths offering:

Freshly picked, plump local blueberries
Warm blueberry pies and cobblers
Homemade blueberry cakes and pastries
Refreshing blueberry ice cream—the ultimate treat for a warm June afternoon.

👑 The Blueberry Jubilee Pageant:

A cornerstone event of the festival, the annual pageant showcases talented local contestants. Come out to cheer them on as they represent the spirit and hospitality of our local community.

🐾 The Annual Doggy Show:

Bring your four-legged friends or grab a spot in the crowd for the crowd-favorite dog show! It's always a wonderful time watching local pups strut their stuff, show off tricks, and compete for fun titles.

🎶 Live Entertainment & Arts:

The streets will be alive with music and live entertainment throughout the day. While you listen, you can browse hundreds of regional juried arts and crafts booths featuring handmade jewelry, woodworking, unique artwork, and local goods.

It’s going to be a fantastic day celebrating the best of South Mississippi. Gathering with neighbors, enjoying great music, and treating yourself to a big scoop of blueberry ice cream is the absolute best way to kick off the summer season!

Happy Memorial Day! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 Memorial Day is observed with the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, and by religious services, parades, and speeches nationwide. Flags, insignia, and flowers are placed on the graves of veterans in local cemeteries. There are also parades and ceremonies. In addition, Memorial Day is considered the start of summer with barbecues and picnics.

Memorial Day, in the United States, holiday (last Monday in May) honoring those who have died while serving in the country’s armed forces. It originated during the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. The first national observance was in 1868. After World War I, the name was changed from Decoration Day to Memorial Day, and in 1971 it became a federal holiday. The day is observed by visits to cemeteries, where flags and other items are placed on the graves of veterans.
