Whisper of Hope

Whisper of Hope Whisper of Hope is a wildlife rescue focused primarily on bats, but we do take other small wild mammals depending on location.

We also focus on education and have bird and snake education ambassadors to perform outreach with the public.

Here’s an Evening bat that we picked up from D’Iberville yesterday enjoying her mealworm dinner. She is healthy, flying, and at a normal weight, so we will attempt to release her back to the night skies tonight.

The Seminole nursery is full of babies. The Eastern Red nursery is full, the Evening bat nursery is full with new juveniles going into that group too. If you would like to donate to their care, please use one of the links below:

It’s Lil Lamar’s nursery and Edgar and Ben just get to live in it. Lol

In the second photo, you see that Poppy is not having any of that mess and has claimed a bat roll for herself.

In today’s edition of “As the Bat Turns” aka Seminole Nursery hijinks:

Poppy has decided sitting on top of Ben is exactly the right spot.

Lil Lamar has decided Edgar is now his good buddy of the day. (Edgar came from Bay St Louis last night)

Edgar who was refusing formula but not pedialyte, was not prepared for the tricky decision of mixing them both to fool him into eating.

Lil Lamar is enjoying a little time out on his caregivers chest after eating his lunch.

We welcomed Poppy this morning from Poplarville. She is dehydrated and very hungry as she has been without her mom for over 24 hours. She is one that we warmed up and fed/hydrated immediately before we even started driving. She is over a week old, so fingers crossed that we can get her past the crucial first 24 hours. She will join the Seminole group.

This is the first year that we have seen such a big difference in the births of Eastern Reds and Seminoles with essentially a whole month between the start of their two baby seasons this year. This means that we, the caregivers, have been on newborn care with every two hours feedings for over 7 weeks now. If we seem a bit tired, a bit pushy for information like photos and travel plans, it’s because we are still trying to feed newborns on an every 2 hours schedule…so bear with us.

*As always, never handle bats with bare hands, we are rabies vaccinated *

If you find a bat on the ground from March thru July in Mississippi, don’t follow Google’s advice. Take a photo and send us a text at 2287314970 and ask “does this bat look ok?”

We don’t expect average people to know a lot about wildlife, especially bats, and the advice out there on the internet can by very conflicting.

“Bats can take off from the ground” but one species in Mississippi absolutely cannot and babies/juveniles can’t fly at all. Eastern Red bats can take off from the ground, but not moms carrying 2-4 babies, and these are the situations that we will help you figure out. Watching and waiting can be dangerous in the current Mississippi weather and definitely if the bat is in an exposed area where they are an easy meal for domestic and wild predators.

So, the answer is simple, if you see a bat somewhere strange, snap the best photo you can, and then send us a text at 228-731-4970 and ask us if we think that bat is ok. Zoe Ann the Eastern Red Bat is our photo tax for today.

Baby Ben (left) was found in Ellisville yesterday and she now joins Lil Lamar in our “small baby” incubator. This is part of our prayer answered as these tiny babies seem to do best with a “sibling”. We want to thank his finders for bringing him so quickly to Petal so we could relay him to Lucedale, especially as the weather decided to turn on us again last night.

This is Lil Lamar. He was found under a tarp yesterday in Purvis after being separated from his mom. He’s about 5 days old.
He likes to eat every 2 hours, cuddle with you and then fuss when you leave him alone. Unfortunately for him, all of our other Seminoles and Eastern Red Bat cohorts are 2-3 weeks older than him this year and we don’t have another similarly sized baby for him to cuddle with. Say a little prayer for him, being separated from mom so young without a sibling or cohort is really hard.

With all the wind and rain, it’s a tough time to be a bat mom. If you get a chance to walk your property today, keep an eye out for these little floofs. Bigger babies + bad weather mean more abandoned babies. Call us if you find bats in need 2287314970 PLEASE don’t use FB messenger for wildlife in need requests. Thanks.
