A beautiful and calm fall day for fifth graders from Thames River Magnet School as they returned to the dock after an enjoyable afternoon on Long Island Sound aboard the Enviro-Lab II, engaging in hands-on marine science activities.

While students prepared to head back to school, Enviro-Lab II headed to the Noank Shipyard for routine maintenance in preparation for another busy year on Long Island Sound. Now back in the water, our research vessel is ready to welcome students aboard for hands-on marine science experiences throughout the year. Thanks to generous support from The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut Foundation, we installed side scan sonar to further our education and research work on the Sound.

More than 4,000 abandoned lobster 🦞 traps removed from the Long Island Sound through the Lobster Trap Recovery and Assessment Partnership (L-TRAP).

Project Oceanology is proud to be part of this collaborative effort with partners from Connecticut and New York, including The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, Save the Sound, Remote Ecologist, and the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program. Together, the partnership is locating, recovering, and documenting lost fishing gear while gathering valuable information about the health of the Sound.

🦑 Happy Squid Day! 🦑

The Atlantic longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealei) is a fascinating marine animal commonly found in the Long Island Sound. Known for its elongated fins and remarkable ability to change color, this squid plays a crucial role in marine ecosystems as both predator and prey. Its adaptability and swift movements make it an intriguing subject for our Project Oceanology Marine Science Educators and ocean enthusiasts alike.

It's also Cephalopod Awareness Week! Squids are part of the cephalopod family, an animal belonging to the group Cephalopoda, containing octopus, squid, cuttlefish, nautilus, and kin. Cephalopods are fascinating animals that have eyes just above their many limbs.

Our Executive Director, Andrew Ely, represented Project Oceanology at the Restore America's Estuaries Coastal & Estuarine Summit held in San Francisco, CA. Andrew presented during the Focus on Education session, showcasing Project Oceanology's Connecticut River Connections program.

Andrew expressed, “The true value of a summit like this lies in the conversations. Sharing ideas with others from across the nation highlights that the challenges we face in Long Island Sound are common among coastal communities everywhere, as are the solutions.”

Our Project Oceanology team had a splash-tacular 💦 time as a Showcase Vendor in the Connecticut Building at The Big E 🎡 in Massachusetts over the past two days! We sincerely thank Connecticut Office of Tourism once again for this wonderful opportunity, along with everyone who took a moment to stop by and share a fin-tastic “hello” 🦈 or to discover how we’re fostering connection with the ocean 🌊 through educational programs, scientific research 🔬, and community outreach 🐟.
