๐ŸŸ Summer Day Camp Spotlight: Ocean Explorer Academy (Ages 9 - 11) ๐Ÿฆ€

Dive into five days of handsโ€‘on marine science and coastal adventure! Day campers explore the waters and habitats of Long Island Sound as they discover the marine animals that call these places home. Theyโ€™ll haul in a trawl net aboard our research vessel, and investigate marsh and intertidal ecosystems in our aquatic backyard! This camp is a good fit for curious campers who love to explore, get their feet wet, and learn by doingโ€”both on land and at sea. ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿฆž Students in grades 4-8 participated in the 21st Annual Marine Science Day at Project Oceanology, exploring the wonders of the Long Island Sound estuary and the field of marine science. ๐ŸŸ

Activities included an aquarium tour of our seawater lab where they interacted with marine animals ๐Ÿชผ, helped set an otter trawl net aboard the Research Vessel Enviro-Lab II and learned about animal adaptations ๐Ÿฆ‘ and the food web in the estuary. They visited the UConn Marine Sciences building to study clams and crabs'๐Ÿฆ€ and how they eat as well as their roles in the food chain and engaged with the Mystic Aquarium on how their Animal Rescue team helps stranded animals on our local beaches so that they can return them to their homes. ๐Ÿฆญ

โ˜€๏ธ Summer Day Camp Spotlight: Undersea Technology Camp (Ages 11 - 13) ๐ŸŸ

Step into the world of ocean technology and marine engineering! For five days, day campers use real scientific tools to study the brackish waters of Long Island Soundโ€”collecting plankton, mapping the seafloor, and measuring water conditions at depth. Working in teams, theyโ€™ll design and build their own SeaPerch ROVs, then put them to the test in daily engineering challenges. From navigating an underwater obstacle course to cleaning a simulated polluted waterway, this camp is a good fit for problemโ€‘solvers who love tech, teamwork, and discovery. ๐Ÿฆˆ
