Hunt County Agency Manager Jeff Whitt is seen here with Sherry Wacasey Holland, dropping off the more than 500 cans of food at FISH Ministries that were collected Monday evening at Hunt County Farm Bureau’s annual meeting. The cans were brought to the meeting by the members of HCFB for their annual drive. If you have not visited FISH Ministries new facility off O’Neal St you need to go give it a look. They are doing wonderful things for the Kingdom!!!

What I see often...People who worked all week. Paid their basic bills. Lived frugally, and struggle with rising grocery prices. Underemployment.

There's a growing struggle in our community that doesn't always look like poverty.

It looks like a mom leaving for work before her children wake up. A dad picking up extra shifts. A family doing everything they can and still coming up short.

**Consider this:** According to the Federal Reserve, 37% of American adults couldn't cover a $400 emergency entirely with cash or its equivalent.

Hunt County has an estimated **95,769 adults and 31,583 children**. If that national rate holds true locally, **more than 35,000 adults** could be facing that same financial vulnerability—and the strain on household budgets affects children, too.

**That's where FISH steps in.**

At Hunt County Shared Ministries, families can visit our client-choice pantry once a month and receive groceries based on household size, helping free up dollars for rent, utilities, transportation, and other necessities.

**We're not replacing their hard work. We're helping their hard work go further.**

Because sometimes **Love Your Neighbor** means helping a working family make the math work.

# Small Miracles, Big Blessings
**Story #1: The Bed She Prayed For**

Someone recently asked what my favorite part of my job is. My answer was easy. **People.** The people we serve and the people who give so generously of their time, resources, and hearts.

At Hunt County Shared Ministries, **“Love Your Neighbor”** is more than our tagline. Sometimes we get to witness what happens when generosity and God's provision come together in extraordinary ways.

And this story is one of them.

Recently, a local medical supply store closed and donated its remaining inventory to us. Among the items was a specialized bed for children with autism and other sensory or sleep challenges.

We knew it could change someone's life. We just didn't know whose.

We offered it to several people. Each time, the answer was no.

**And then we met a mother who had been praying for that EXACT bed for TWO YEARS.**

Not just a bed like it. **The exact brand. The exact model number.**

Her young son with autism struggled to sleep through the night, and the entire family struggled along with him.

For two years, she had prayed for this bed.

And somehow, through a donated inventory, a series of connections, and several closed doors, it found its way to her.

**The very first night, her son slept beautifully. And so did the rest of his family.**

Think about that.

A business closes. A bed is donated. Others pass it by. And a mother's two-year prayer is answered.

We couldn't have planned it. We simply had the privilege of connecting a gift with a need.

**What looked like leftover inventory to one business became an answer to prayer for one family.**

Sometimes loving your neighbor means providing groceries. Sometimes it's helping someone through a crisis. And sometimes, it's being the unexpected connection between a mother's prayer and a peaceful night's sleep.

**Small miracles. Big blessings.**

What a privilege to be part of what God is doing through the generosity of our neighbors.

**“I live in a motel.”**

We hear that more than you might think. And sometimes, what it really means is:

**I used to have a home.**

I recently watched this happen to someone I know. Her rental became so badly infested that when she finally got out, much of what she owned couldn't go with her. **She had to burn many of her belongings.**

Imagine trying to start over when you've lost not only your home and most of what you own—but you're trying to rebuild **without a steady income, or with an income that leaves absolutely no margin in the budget.**

Then comes the motel.

And this is where something we don't talk about enough happens.

**HOME**
↓
**MOTEL**
↓
**CAR**
↓
**STREET**

The motel isn't necessarily the beginning of homelessness.

Sometimes it's somewhere in the middle.

There is still a bed. A shower. A door that locks. From the outside, it can even look like someone has housing.

But the weekly motel bill consumes the money that could become a deposit on another apartment.

Then something else happens.

A hospital stay.
A missed paycheck.
A car repair they can't afford.
A rent increase.
Another unexpected expense.

The car breaks down, and now getting to work becomes difficult.

Another bill comes due, a medical event happens... And suddenly the motel room is gone too.

This slide can begin in all kinds of ways—a major home repair someone can't afford, an unsafe or infested rental and a landlord who won't make repairs, an illness, lost hours at work, or simply one expense too many.

And with every step down, something else disappears.

The furniture.
The dishes.
The children's things.
The work clothes.
The photographs.
The important papers.

A lifetime can be reduced to what fits in a car. And if the car goes?

**Sometimes what fits in your hands.**

This is why a food pantry is about much more than hunger.

**Food can bridge a gap in a household budget.**

When a neighbor can get groceries from our pantry, the money they would have spent on food can stay available for the rent. The electric bill. Gas to get to work. A prescription. A car repair. A water heater.

Sometimes that little bit of breathing room is enough to keep the next domino from falling.

We aren't pretending groceries can solve every problem that leads to homelessness.

But sometimes **bridging the budget gap with food from our pantry can help keep a temporary crisis from becoming a permanent one.**

Because once someone starts falling, every loss makes the next loss easier.

**Sometimes the best way to help someone out of homelessness is to reach them before they get there.**

At Hunt County Shared Ministries, that's part of what it means to **Love Your Neighbor.**

💙 Today is National BRAVE Day, and September is Hunger Action Month.

Sometimes brave looks like an older gentleman standing in front of us with tears in his eyes, quietly saying, “I’ve never had to ask for help before.”

He’s worked his whole life. Paid his bills. Taken care of his family. Helped others when he could. But now the grocery money doesn’t stretch as far, a prescription costs more than expected, and for the first time, he needs a little help.

It took courage for him to walk through our doors.

Because of you, we were able to help.

He could choose food to take home and receive help with other immediate needs, all while being treated with dignity and kindness.

During Hunger Action Month, we’re reminded that hunger doesn’t always look the way we expect.

Monthly gifts help HCSM be ready every day. They help provide food for our Client Choice Pantry, prescription and emergency assistance, and the everyday resources it takes to respond when a neighbor walks through our doors needing help.

Even a small monthly gift gives us dependable support we can count on throughout the year. 💙
