Today, we join the world in mourning a true icon and honoring the beautiful legacy of Dolly Parton. Back in August 2022, we had the incredible honor of featuring Dolly on the cover of Lake Oconee Neighbors.

When it came time to spread the word about the Imagination Library's mission and the vital importance of children reading, Dolly and her team specifically chose Best Version Media (BVM) magazines to carry her message into the hearts of local communities. We are so proud that Lake Oconee Neighbors was one of the magazines chosen to share this beautiful story.

While the world knows her for her unforgettable music, her most profound legacy lives on in the minds of children everywhere. Inspired by her father, who never had the chance to go to school to learn to read or write, Dolly started the program in 1995 to provide kids with early access to books.

What started as a local effort providing books to 3,000 children in her hometown grew into an international force for good. The Imagination Library has provided the priceless gift of literacy to nearly 1.3 million children each month, completely free of charge to kids from birth to age 5. By the time of our publication, her foundation had already celebrated its 100-millionth book milestone.

As Dolly so beautifully put it: "Reading inspires us to dream."

Thank you, Dolly, for opening the door for millions of children to dream big. We wanted to share our complete August 2022 feature here today to continue celebrating her incredible legacy and spreading the mission of the Imagination Library.

In our August issue, an inadvertent production error caused the final paragraphs of "Paws, Pints and One Very Lucky Dog" to be cut short. We know how much our readers have been following this amazing community initiative, and we want to ensure you get the whole story!

We had the absolute honor of sharing the story of Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) for this month's cover feature. This incredible team is doing amazing things for our local community, stepping up every single day to help locals in need across Greene and Putnam counties. From critical home repairs and providing or repairing cars for families to building hand-crafted beds for kids, they are doing true neighborly work with the help of some other fantastic local groups to change lives right in our own backyard.

If you don't receive the magazine at home, we always drop off extra copies at local spots around town like PJ's Coffee and Compassion Cafe.

The June issue of Lake Oconee Neighbors is out, and this month I had the opportunity to photograph Scott Stefano for a feature that “dives” into a lifetime of adventure beneath the surface.

A diver, instructor, and lifelong explorer, Scott has spent decades discovering places most people will never see while sharing that passion with his family and countless students along the way. As a SCUBA instructor myself, what I admire most about Scott is not just his experience, but his unwavering enthusiasm for introducing others to a world that has shaped so much of his life…even after all these years of teaching. He approaches every dive, class, and group of students with the same care, attention, and excitement as the last.

Stories like this are one of the reasons I love community magazines. Every issue uncovers the story of people whose passions, talents, and experiences help make this area such an interesting place to live.
