As Halloween approaches, one decoration deserves to stay on the store shelf: synthetic spiderwebs. While these stretchy strands might seem like harmless fun, they're creating a serious threat to birds in our communities.

Key Hazards to Wildlife:

* Entanglement and Trapping: Unlike natural spider silk which breaks easily under pressure, synthetic fibers hold strong. Birds, bats, bees, butterflies, and even small mammals may easily become trapped.
* Physical Injuries: As animals struggle to escape, the tough fibers wrap tightly around wings, feet, and bodies. This may lead to restricted blood flow, tissue damage, broken bones or wings, and even the amputation of toes or digits.
* Exhaustion and Starvation: Trapped animals that cannot free themselves often succumb to dehydration, exhaustion, or starvation before being found.
* Peak Migration Risk: Outdoor decoration peaks during October, which coincides with the fall bird migration season, increasing the number of animals exposed to these hidden obstacles.
* Persistent Environmental Pollution: Made from non-biodegradable plastics, the fibers blow into trees and shrubs, remaining in the environment for months and breaking down into harmful microplastics

For every pound of shrimp caught, more than four pounds of marine life may be wasted. Large-scale, inshore bottom shrimp trawling is a practice that our marine life often cannot survive. Our nurseries provide habitats needed for varieties of marine life to grow, mature, and repopulate. Keeping these habitats safe is crucial for fisheries and nurseries to survive. We need our nurseries, and they need us. Take a stand for marine life and .

It’s Native Plants Week in NC! Here are some of NC’s wonderful native plants.

Native plants are important because they:

🌸are low maintenance once established
🌼 are beautiful year-round
🌸 are healthier for people because they don’t require fertilizer or pesticides
🌼 are good for the climate—especially long-living trees that store carbon dioxide
🌸 conserve water because they are adapted to the local environment
🌼 benefit wildlife like butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and bats by providing food and shelter.
