We learned yesterday that Greensboro's City Council is planning to adopt a 120-day data center moratorium at its meeting on August 18, 2026. A moratorium allows time for the community to come together around how to regulate any data centers that may get built here. While a number of other NC localities have approved data center moratoriums lasting one and two years, our leaders are choosing to pack our process into four months. These four months will be filled with elections and holidays and will fly by. The moratorium will end before 2026 is over. In that time, will the public have an adequate opportunity to educate itself over the potential impacts of the data center industry and be involved in designing the regulations that we need to govern their activities? Our coalition has joined with other local groups seeking a 32-month moratorium, which is what we understand to be the maximum time possible. Our City Council is choosing to approve just a small fraction of that for its 120-day pause on data centers. What is the rush? Why are we not giving the process the time that it requires to include the voices of the public?

Did you know that you can look up polling results for how people are reacting to climate change? This site will show you specific states and even counties. It reports that in Guilford County, 74% of people support a transition to 100% clean energy in the US by 2050. We think 74% is a pretty hefty percentage! And we love the goal of 100% clean energy by 2050!

Explore American attitudes and opinions about climate change across every state and county.

The data centers industry is now advertising to try to gain the public's support. But we need time to sort through all the issues, work with our elected officials to figure out what our future should look like, and craft the needed regulations. A 32-month moratorium is the right next step.

North Carolina Connects has sponsored a six-figure advertising campaign touting the economic and business benefits of data centers.
