Our next Rescue Spotlight shines on Feathers & Fangs in Alabama.

Feathers & Fangs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit exotic animal rescue founded by Codi Smith, Levi Smith, and Layla Moberg in October 2023. They are dedicated to providing safe shelter, proper husbandry, and lifelong placement for animals in need.
Feathers & Fangs is largely self-funded, relying on donations to support daily operations, enclosure development, veterinary care, and long-term habitat planning. The rescue emphasizes education, responsible ownership, and advocacy to improve outcomes for exotic species. “Running a nonprofit is definitely a passion project. We willingly donate our time, energy, and money to help those without a voice, the misunderstood, and the abandoned.”

Our next Rescue Spotlight shines on Smoky Mountain Exotics Rescue and Rehabilitation in Tennessee.

Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue and Rehabilitation began as Smoky Mtn Parrot Rescue, built from a lifelong passion for working with exotic animals. With a specialty in birds and small mammals, their founder saw firsthand how many exotic pets needed safe, knowledgeable placement, rehabilitation, and long-term care. As the need quickly grew, so did the mission. Today, they operate Smoky Mtn Parrot Rescue, Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue and Rehabilitation, and Smoky Mtn Serpent Rescue — three connected rescue efforts dedicated to helping parrots, exotic mammals, reptiles, and domestic snakes throughout the Smoky Mountain region and beyond. Their work focuses on rescue, rehabilitation, education, and responsible placement. Many exotic animals require specialized diets, housing, handling, enrichment, and experienced care, and their goal is to make sure each animal has the best possible chance at a safe, healthy, and permanent home. What started with parrots has grown into a larger mission: helping the exotic animals that often have nowhere else to go, while educating the community about the responsibility, commitment, and compassion these animals deserve.

READ THIS! This doesn’t only apply to this rescue, but almost every rescue right now. If you want us to respond faster, by all means, come volunteer and free up some of our time.

I need to address something because lately the disrespect and entitlement has honestly become exhausting.

Every single day I have people call, text, email me, message my personal page, and then also message the business page regarding the exact same thing. I am ONE person. There is absolutely no reason to contact me 3–4 different ways over the same situation. All it does is create extra work and extra stress that could easily be avoided.

Please pick ONE method of communication and allow me time to respond. I do regularly check messages and I do my best to return calls and respond the same day when possible, but I am caring for 40–50 birds at any given time, running a household, being a mom, managing a nonprofit rescue, handling medical care, coordinating transports, intakes, adoptions, quarantines, paperwork, cleaning, feeding schedules, and emergencies.

The birds come first. Always.

I am stressed. I am exhausted. I do not always feel well physically, but I still continue to push through every single day for the greater good of these birds because THEY depend on me.

What I will no longer tolerate is people treating me like I am beneath them because they want immediate help or immediate responses. Rescue work does not function like customer service at a retail store. There are policies and procedures in place for a reason — the safety of this flock.

Yes, we require disease testing or proper quarantine arrangements before intake.
Yes, we have waitlists.
Yes, quarantine space is limited.
Yes, sometimes birds have to wait unless they are fully vetted or it is a true emergency situation.

That is NOT us being rude. That is us protecting the birds already here, the birds coming in, and the adopters trusting us to keep everyone safe.

Right now we are beyond full. Completely. But we are still trying our best to help where we can.

What we need from people right now is grace, patience, honesty, and respect. Not harassment across multiple platforms because you haven’t gotten an answer within an hour.

If you leave me a message, I WILL see it. I WILL respond when I am able. But I cannot be available at everybody’s beck and call 24/7 while trying to hold this entire rescue together.
