The Josephine County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse is a non-profit organization with a Constitution and By-Laws. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse (JCSMP) was formed by Sheriff Lloyd Lewis in the fall of 1946 for the purpose of county disaster and emergency services. In addition, members may assist the sheriff’s office in community events or as needed, stimulate horsemanship and good fellowsh

ip, and perpetuate the customs, traditions, and pageantry of the early days of the State of Oregon. JCSMP is a member of the Oregon Association of Mounted Posses (OAMP) further referred to as “State”. Annual activities may include State Convention in February, State Search and Rescue Symposium in May, State Pistol Shoot in June, State Trail Ride in July, assist at the Josephine County Fair in August and participate at State Shodeo in September. (Shodeo is a competition between State Posses competing in events including gaming, performance classes, trail classes and drill team competition) or other OAMP events. In addition to assisting with the Josephine County Fair in August, the JCSMP may also host fund raising events such as Horse Shows and/or Gymkhanas which are open to the Public, or other events deem acceptable by the membership. Monthly activities consist of a general meeting the first Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at a location as disclosed in advance and the ride nights at the Fairgrounds arena, the third Wednesday of every month, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Ride nights may include gaming practice, performance practice, drill practice or just riding to improve horsemanship. Guests are welcome to join a Posse member with a signed release form submitted to a Posse member to be filed each time they attend. Parades, gatherings and monthly trail rides are scheduled when possible. The Posse also may participate in various local community service projects such as parking cars or security for community events as requested. Persons 21 years of age or older interested in learning more about the Posse may contact any active Posse member for information.

On May 26th, four dedicated members of the Posse were honored to assist with parking coordination and the Presentation of the Colors during Hidden Valley High School’s graduation ceremony, despite several rain showers throughout the evening.

Life Member Jani Zigray-Cochran proudly carried the American flag during the National Anthem, representing the Posse with dignity and pride. Jani was joined by Leanna Jesse, Sandi Humphfres, and Donna Vest, whose service and commitment helped make the evening both meaningful and memorable.
