The Selfish Marriage
What does it feel like to live in a selfish marriage—where one spouse consistently puts their own needs, desires, opinions, and priorities before the needs of the marriage?
A selfish marriage can exist even when both people are physically present. One spouse may make decisions independently, pursue their own interests, build a life around themselves, or move forward without considering their partner. Over time, the marriage can begin to feel less like a partnership and more like two individuals living separate lives under the same covenant.
In a selfish marriage, the question is often, “What do I want?” instead of “What is best for us?”
It may look like doing everything without your spouse, making major decisions without including them, prioritizing personal comfort over marital responsibility, or expecting the marriage to accommodate one person’s desires while the other continually sacrifices.
The problem is not that spouses have individual needs, dreams, or interests. Healthy marriages allow room for individuality. The problem begins when self becomes more important than the covenant.
Marriage requires two people who are willing to move from “me” to “we.”
When everything revolves around one person, the other spouse can begin to feel unseen, unheard, unimportant, and alone—even while being married.
That is what we call the selfish marriage: a marriage where self-interest has slowly taken the place of partnership, consideration, sacrifice, and mutual responsibility.

Don’t compare your pain to someone else’s pain, and don’t minimize what you’ve been through simply because someone else has experienced something different—or even something that appears worse.
Pain is pain. What you experienced was real, and you experienced it through the lens of your own expectations, capacity, relationships, history, and understanding.
You don’t have to convince yourself that it “wasn’t that bad” just because someone else had it worse. There is room for compassion for someone else’s story without invalidating your own..
