Today we remember one of the greatest advocates of the Lyme & TBD community, Patricia V. Smith. Pat passed away on August 17, 2024.

Pat was a passionate advocate for Lyme disease & tick-borne illness awareness, volunteering with the Lyme Disease Association of NJ and later founding the national Lyme Disease Association, Inc., which she led until her final days as the non-profits' president.

She lobbied state and local leaders to improve educational initiatives, including home study reform and in-services for teachers and school nurses. In collaboration with author Amy Tan, she created the LymeAid 4 Kids program, awarding grants to families of children in need of treatment.

LA4K carries on Pat's legacy through the stewardship of the Colorado Tick-Borne Disease Awareness Association (Below in the center seated is Pat Smith with many of the Lyme community advocates at the 2018 advocate meeting in conjunction with the LDA-Columbia medical conference.)

Dear Members and Supporters,

After thoughtful consideration, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to dissolve the Lyme Association of Greater Kansas City and begin the formal process of permanently closing our organization on September 1, 2026.

This decision was not made lightly. For over three decades, the Association has operated entirely through the dedication of volunteers who generously gave their time, energy, and expertise to support our mission and serve our community. We are deeply grateful to every volunteer, member, donor, and supporter who helped make our work possible.

As our community and the healthcare landscape have evolved, the Board has concluded that this is the appropriate time to bring the Lyme Association's work to a close. When our organization was founded in 1993, reliable treatment information and patient support were difficult to access. Today, educational resources, medical research, and treatment information are more widely available than ever before, allowing individuals and families to connect with information and support in new ways.

We are also much encouraged by the growing national attention being given to advancing research, improving treatments, and expanding opportunities for Lyme patients and their families. Continued collaboration among researchers, healthcare professionals, advocacy organizations, and government agencies offers hope for meaningful progress in the years ahead.

Although this chapter is coming to an end, we hope the work of the Lyme Association has made a lasting difference in the lives of those we served. We are honored to have been part of the Lyme community of Kansas and Missouri and are thankful for the friendships, support, and shared commitment that have defined our organization over the many years.

In the event you need assistance going forward, The Colorado Tick-borne Disease Awareness Association is available to assist you with questions or concerns. www.coloradoticks.org

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your support, trust, and commitment throughout the years. It has been our privilege to travel this journey with you.

With sincere gratitude,

The Board of Directors
Lyme Association of Greater Kansas City
